I have 4 saws, all different sizes, all Stihl. I use a 36" bar on my vintage O56 which I use mostly for bucking because it's such a pig. But it's a re jetted race horse and a bad ass pig. BTW, these Stihl field sharpeners work great and save time

If I'm going to cut one that fell in our back yard, I would need one of these...

The MS270 20 wasn't enough saw. The tree is nearly twice as big as what they are cutting in the video below. I got it down to 30 ft total length and left it. Tried to drag it out with my LandCruiser, but it would not move.

I see the Ms170 14 as a pruner and no more than that.

All my saws have full chisel chains (yellow stickered in the Stihl world), and even the small ones become more than just pruners. I was made a believer about a decade back watching a pro take down a big red oak and cut it up. Using a pro TC saw while his big saws sat on the sidelines. Stihl even puts those tiny bars and green safety chains on their pole saws :(. Cost me another Benjamin to get a decent bar (10" I think), that could accomodate a yellow coded chain that turned it from a pruner into a saw thats means business. Unless you're a novice ... ditch the green safety chains .... I've never had a kickback ... it's mostly technique.

Happy sawing :)!

I'll now tackle stuff with my 201TC 14" bar (could handle a 16" easy) that I used to reserve for the big saws. Y'all can have yer big V8s...

But nuthin' is like a big azz saw when ya do need one.... just like a big V8 ;)

Where's Rusty wif his 5' bar :D.

I took a look at my chainsaw last night to confirm the model # and engine size . It is a Poulan 3816 so 38 CC's and 16" bar . By no means a powerhouse but it runs well . I may for the heck of it try a full chisel chain if one exists for this saw . I can always buy a larger saw if needed and will continue to look for a clean used one . Thanks for the advice guys .

If you guys want, I can arrange a BBQ/Saw/F1 race in October. I'm 45 minutes from the track, have big oaks, and the best BBQ (that you can buy) in the world is half way between the two.;)

My father gave me his old Stihl 032 AV.
It’s over 30 years old or more. Made in West Germany. It does have a chain brake and anti vibration bar. He cut a lot of trees and firewood with it. Still runs great.

I do as well. Came with the farm - only of the only things that ran when I bought this place 26 years ago. Still a hummer.

Chains make all the difference. In the early day here I was cutting a lot...I had a rotation of 10 chains with semi chisel. I'd drop 5 off at the local Mennonite Stihl dealer and pick up the 5 they sharpened.

BTW, wear protective gear, please. I came very close one day when I was not wearing protective chaps to making my f'ed up left leg even more f'ed up.

This can not be reiterated loudly enough. I got so comfortable with the saw, but it jerked on me once and scared the **** out of me. I killed the saw and sat down. I was in shorts and flip flops. I don't wear tennis shoes when I saw anymore either, I wear steel toed boots.

Put the boots on Seahawk.

No doubt,, steel toe boots, eye and ear protection. And if you want your saw to keep good compression, give it a chance to warm up a bit. So many just start it up and let her rip. Heat expansion rates for those tiny parts ya know

rfuerst911sc 08-10-2021 10:47 AM

Stopped in a local Tractor Supply store today and they stock a SC56 full chisel chain that fits my Poulan . For $20.00 I think I will try one . Made of titanium not sure if standard hand file can sharpen it ? I didn't buy I need to research a little bit .

gregpark 08-10-2021 11:07 AM

No round rat tail, use a triangle or 6 corner file

The fuel line in the Echo (16" bar) actually dissolved over time and close inspection revealed a case crack, so it wasn't worth fixing.

The Stihl (80's vintage, 20" bar) and the Craftsman (by far the oldest one, 70's vintage, 14" bar) are still working well. The Craftsman needs some carb adjustments to start and run properly sometimes after it has been sitting for a long time but otherwise it is ok. The Craftsman is actually my go-to saw because of its bar size.

I can see why saws of that vintage are available because I got one of mine from my dad when he got too old for that kind of work.

Correction: My Craftsman chain saw has a 16" bar not a 14". Also, fyi, the Craftsman chainsaws were (are?) made by Husqvarna.

Not vintage but found a guy that moved here from up North . He no longer needs his chainsaws . He has a Husqvarna 450 + 455 that he will sell for $200.00 for the pair . Typical " ran great when stored " so it's possible they will need carb work . Or it's possible they both may run great . He said no problem if I bring two cycle mix we can try to start them . I may have to go look at them this weekend .

Mine is a Husqvarna 455. I love it.

porsche930dude 08-13-2021 06:56 PM

I dont like Husqvarnas at all they always have stupid problems and poor engineering. The saws and the lawn mowers. Im a small engine mechanic i repair these things daily. If I had one that worked the first thing id do is sell it

rfuerst911sc 08-14-2021 03:45 AM

Well vintage it is ! Last night on a whim I won a fleabay auction for an Echo CS-452 VL chainsaw . An estate sale that supposedly has good compression but not running . They think carb needs cleaning/rebuild .For $66.50 it's worth a shot . Back in the day I used to sell McCulloch and Partner chainsaws this one reminds me of the old 10-10 mac's .

Per the pics on the auction site it is visually in great shape , that is what made my decision to give it a shot . Next hurdle is to receive the saw as shipping from Pa. to Ga. could be dicey . Time will tell if this was a diamond in the rough or that I should have my head examined 😁

rfuerst911sc 08-15-2021 05:56 AM

Received the tracking number yesterday and it has started the journey from Pa. . Tracking states will be delivered this coming Thursday . Hopefully all goes as planned .

rfuerst911sc 08-18-2021 03:04 PM

Update: My fears of a shipping snafu was not needed as the chainsaw was delivered about 30 minutes ago . No shipping damage and it looks as good as the pics in the ad . Did a pull or two on the starter cord wow she's got compression ! I have an owners manual coming on Friday. Will post some pics when I get it assembled and cleaned up .

Bill Douglas 08-18-2021 03:15 PM

Excellent.

I run a bit more oil than the recommended 50:1. that's one of the things they said on the chainsaw course. Stihl brand full synthetic.
