EV cars
The media and liberals are really pushing EV cars. They talk in articles like they will be here soon and everyone wants one . Just not true. Americans hate electric cars. Only 2% of us drive them. The working poor can never buy one let alone charge one or insure one. The average price of an Ev now is $54,000! The middle class drives $23,000 Honda Civics. The working poor drive 1998 Dodge caravans. Also what about the millions of people that live in huge apartment complexes where everyone is parked on the street for city blocks? Where would they possibly charge at night? Impossible I say! Only the rich will buy them for a while. The model S Tesla costs $90,000 and the model 3 is $40,000. The electric cars from Porsche and BMW cost well over $100,000.

Nick,
You know you could remove the word "electric " and move the decimal places in your post and it would be almost exactly what some folks were saying about cars replacing horses 120 years ago. I wonder how much gasoline was dumped into streams before they found a market for the stuff. Best Les

This again?
BTW I’m an American and I don’t hate electric cars, so if you want to talk about misinformation you can start with your own post.

Our car delivery date got pushed up way early. Any week now. Probably get it before our electrician can get the charger installed.
I’ll be happy having the only gas guzzler in the household. We shall see how it really works out. But I have an open mind.

I am confident that if I had the means, a Taycan would be in my driveway as we speak. As it stands, I am thinking long and hard about the F150 Lightning . . . or a Rivian.

Plaid. One reason to get one. Actually the only reason I would get one. $129,000, the only reason I will not get one.

Americans hate electric cars? So if two Americans hate hydrogen, gas or diesel fueled cars, Americans must then hate them too. So, Americans hate cars. Got it!

I don't hate electric cars.
I just dislike the false narratives around them. I used to race electric RC in an open gas/electric monster truck class. As for the "what the horse and buggy folk said" argument, well, I'm not sure there were calls to ban horses in just a few years despite not having infrastructure to supply cars. And a second point on that, is that eletric cars used to outnumber gasoline cars by a significant margin. Probably a forgotten history, oh well. Then along came a few inventions that popped gasoline into the lead. What I object to is the forcing. People do want better and if you force suboptimal it has long term costs. The best scenario is to let electric cars develop as a luxury item for those with the passion. They have the resources, and will make it happen. |

Well I bough used 'murica-built Chevy Volt (called Ampera overhere) and it works just fine in -20. OK, it is not a pure EV but PHEV but ICE is seldom used (I filled up three times in 12000 km). It decimated my gas bills. Really spoiled me, it feels funny to drive a gas car with all the noise and fumes.
My next car is BEV

Apparently the $129,000 was the target/teaser price.

I just came back from a 5000 mile trip across the country in a Honda CRV. It took 6 minutes to fill it up and we got near 400 miles on a tank. I noticed that I did not see any EV cars in hwy 40 and 70 and no charging stations. And if there were it would add hours to the driving just to charge. The EV is not ready for prime time. Wait! It is ready for prime time if you are rich and have a garage and can afford the new charging equipment on your garage wall. My main point is there is no place to overnight charge for most of the millions who park on the streets.

As a point of curiosity, how many places outlawed horses in order to get people to change to automobiles?

Nailed it on the media pushing electric. Motor Trend, one of the few car magazines left, is pushing electric. Saddens me to thumb through an issue. Flame my Bullitt Mustang all you wish, guys...however, I love the V-8 rumble I hear when I fire it up. Ford spent some coin to get that sound. Special mufflers and crossover tube on the '08-'09 Bullitt models...trying to achieve the movie soundtrack sound while remaining barely within the DOT decibles limit. Mine just turned 32,000 on it's odo. I hope it's the last car I buy.. Death before Prius! Death before Electric! Can't say I agree with this guy's appearance changes to his car, but here's the sound...1:33 video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkUN2zG-Brs

Paul is right. You can't beat the sound and feel of a good V8. I love it.
However we went the EV direction last year, & it fits our situation very well. As I've said before, we use excess solar generation to supply power for the car (we'll see just how much next March when the next true up date arrives). Although EV owners are getting by now on the cheap - energy wise - the governments will be figuring out how to take up the slack (get their pound of flesh) compared to gas revenues, etc. We're all feeling smug right now but after a few years, maybe not so much. We use my Ford passenger van to traveling, camping, hauliing, etc. I'd rather drive it than my wife's Tesla, but they compliment each other very well. The transition to EVs is in the dream stage in terms of infrastructure, and the actual implementation is pretty far off in my opinion. I'm convinced returning to nuclear energy is in our future.
