Big, cushy, bouncy, super grippy tires didn't hurt. Maybe he was thinking, "this is like a 911 with the motor in the back, it should act like a pendulum." Then he probably did some mental math with the weight of the motor and him in the back, and the length of the vehicle, and the coefficient of kinetic friction of the tires (much lower when they are spinning than when they are hooked up). I'm sure he knows both coefficients.

Yep.

My guess is that they had some old tires, pumped them up a bit thinking that they could make this happen. Which it could have, yet it appears that the nat freq of the car was sympathetic to the tire ... should have pushed up the tire pressure even more.
