Unsubscribe

Every so often, I get emails relating to health problems with solutions.

I normally click on the 'unsubscribe' link and delete the email.

What about the ones that ask for your email address before you can unsubscribe??
Am I just 'feeding the problem' if I give my email?

Steve Carlton 08-12-2021 05:48 PM

I'd mark it as spam.

I put in my email and unsubscribe. It works for abut 2 or 3 weeks. Then I get a few more and I do it again. I'd rather get a few spams every 3 weeks than 10 every day which is what I was getting before I started the unsubscribe thing.

As a general rule you shouldn't interact in any way with any unsolicited email.

By hitting the unsubscribe button you're actually confirm that your email address is valid.

- Just mark any suspect emails as junk.

Actually, I'd like a canned pork subscription.

Start using +1 addresses when signing up for stuff.

Most email systems support them.

Let’s say you were signing up for Pelican.

Instead of scott@domain.com enter scott+pelican@domain.com

Any emails from pelican will come in as that address and your providers system will route it to scott@domain.com

Set a rule in your email client to move all email containing pelican in the address to a folder which you’d logically name pelican

Here’s the good part, when you start getting spam at the +1 address that’s NOT from pelican you know they are selling their list.

Legit companies that I once did business with but am no longer interested get an unsubscribe. And that seems to work.

Others get marked as spam.

Yes legit companies will 100% honor an unsubscribe.

Most of them will use a legit mass email service that manages the list unsubscribes and they are diligent because spam reporting can get their IPs blacklisted which affects their business so they take it seriously

This!

Most on-line businesses "automatically" sign me up for the newsletter and other crap after I bought from them. On those companies, yep, I will unsubscribe and that is fine.

For pure random spam I just send it to the blocked senders list and that puts all the email from them in a junk folder. I empty that folder once per week afrer a quick perusal of the email in there to be sure no legit email was caught. Then flush em all.
