Well, Duh

Ok, I am not the brightest light in the Chandelier..we all know that.

So, this summer I set up a Hummingbird feeder outside my home office. Broadway show, folks, four and five at a time. Drama, reconciliation, more drama...Aerial displays that defy aero.

So, this week, no action at all: it is like my Hummingbird feeder is Planet Hollywood.

I express my concern to my wife: "What happened?"

"You do know they migrate south, right?"

Well, duh.

Hey, I didn’t know that either, so we can be dumb together.

We, you and I, have the technology

Just one of those moments...probably not thread worthy but my MIL is here for dinner.

Yeah, they saddle up geese and ride those bad boys south just like a Harley.

Everyone knows that

Our feeders went "dark" this week, too. I was guessing they'd headed out of town.

My wife just cleaned up all the humming bird feeders today. Guess they know what's coming soon.

There are some up here that stay all winter, and somehow they survive.

Here in the PNW we have 'em all winter.

Gotta feed 'em forever once you start or the guilt would be unbearable.

My observation from watching my 2 feeders? Hummingbirds are a-holes.

Lazy bastards don't fly that far south. we don't get them here.

However hardworking Alaskan Godwits visit us each summer for a meal and to hang out at the beaches.

It's true. You'd think such tiny animals would benefit from cooperation and take turns at the feeder. Nope. They spend more time chasing each other off than eating sometimes.

Holy moley! My Wife said to me this week "Oh, you put the hummingbird feeder back up!"

Me all proud "Yeah, I felt that they would need a little sustenance to get them through the Winter".

Feeders still full. I was wondering what happened.

They are very territorial when it comes to protecting their food source.
We still have plenty of them in our yard and there always seem to be some around even in the middle of winter. No feeders here, just lots of flowers thanks to my wife.

We have some who stay the winter here....so not all species of them migrate?

Here in NM we're like the hummingbird superhighway - usually we'll have a dozen or more feeding or loitering on our canyon-edge lot.

The broad-tailed, calliope and black chinned ones are pretty chill. It's those orange rufous ones that are the real jerks. They seem to leave in late August so there's peace now.

Can you imagine the terror that one of our monster NM ravens would be if crossed with a hummingbird?

We're blissfully mosquito free here so we just leave the doors wide open - this little one got into the house the other year and we got him out safely, after collecting evidence...

That's why I took down the feeder in the first place. Got tired of being "blindside buzzed" while up on the ladder.
