CDC: 5800 Breakthrough cases out of 75 million fully vaccinated

Saw this and thought someone else might find it interesting. Figured since most were quoting the CNN story I'd just link it. It's based on the number of reported breakthrough cases.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/04/14/health/breakthrough-infections-covid-vaccines-cdc/index.html

"Some became seriously ill and 74 people died, the CDC said. It said 396 -- 7% -- of those who got infected after they were vaccinated required hospitalization."

"Vaccine breakthrough infections were reported among all people of all ages eligible for vaccination. However, a little over 40% of the infections were in people 60 or more years of age," the CDC said."

"Most, 65%, were female and 29% of the so-called breakthrough infections were asymptomatic."

Context would be good. - What is the percentage trend of non-vaccinated infections that were asymptomatic?

All in all, that has been a big feature of this virus, right? -asymptomatic infections? People don't even know that they have it...

I suppose that's tough to know. My guess is a whole lot of use have been exposed and/or had the CV and never even knew it. --Those show-offs strutting around with fully functioning immune systems. - sheesh. Kids these days...

you'd think that with a roughly 95% effective rate the rate of "breakthrough" infections would be around 5% or 375,000 cases. 5800 cases points to an effective rate of the vaccine + measures to be something like 99.9993%

the fact that its only 5800 shows how effective the vaccine and our measures so far are doing. thats amazing. get vaccinated poeple!

Out of the 75 million fully vaccinated 74 people died and 396 needed hospitalization.

Out of the remaining 250 million not fully vaccinated 9,500 have died this month and 10's of thousands hospitalized.

That's great news on the effectiveness

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the US gov't is paying for all uninsured COVID patients and insurance companies are waiving all copays and deductibles. Since the vaccine appears so effective in preventing COVID, I think at some point when everyone could have gotten a vaccine, that CMS and commercial insurances should be allowed to charge $500 deductibles for new infections in which people refused the vaccine for non-Medical reasons. If not, we will never get to herd immunity with all the anti-vaxxers and science Luddites.

Correction:

For public policy Luddites, the government doesn’t pay for anything.

Yes, we all pay at the end of the day via taxes. I just don't want more of my taxes paying for medical bills for something that could be avoided by a simple jab.

Let's keep in mind that the 5800 represents breakthrough cases reported to the CDC. I'd have to go back and look but I think I posted something about the CDC starting to track breakthrough cases better in the last few weeks.

Ha, good one, very amusing. Next we can start refusing care for fat people who get diabetes, because they could just eat healthier and exercise.

Wait, you are not seriously thinking this is a wise or workable suggestion

Not refuse care, but their policy should be more expensive.

We pay higher rates for teens (and especially male) drivers due to increased risk. Why shouldn't obese people pay a premium based on their increased risk?

but the 375,000 cases assumes that all encounter the virus - not everyone does
