glueing things together - anxiety.

hahah.

every since I was little kid, I felt fast acting glues gave me anxiety. I think I glued a few things badly and had difficulty pulling them apart. model gliders was not a good hobby for me.

I have to glue something on my kayak today. it says, to apply glue to both pieces, let cure for 2 minutes and stick them together "correctly" gah..

hahahha..i'll post pics of myself glued to my kayak if applicable.

If you can orient the kayak so the part to be glued and the part to be glued to are in a vertical orientation apply the glue to each piece, then use toothpicks/skewers/dowels to keep the pieces separated while you align the pieces and let the glue cure..

After the dwell time... start pulling the spacers one at a time while assuring the alignment of the pieces..

I'm yet to follow my own advice. But I think it's a good idea to use less glue other than more. Whenever I do something like this it ends up being an unnecessary mess.

also get both surfaces sanded rough surface style then clean with a solvent. And have fun!

Nice! And “dwell time”. Learned something today.

The less sniffing...the less anxiety.

We do this with dowels when gluing Formica to counter tops. The "rolling" action helps to align the edges. Works like a charm!

How do you get out a dowel that has "dwelled" too long?

I know what you mean about anxiety. One or two jobs just pulled apart is enough to only want to rely on mechanical fastening. Gluing and epoxying is all about surface prep and using the correct epoxy for the materials. Surgically clean surfaces with some tooth for epoxy to adhere to and anxiety fades away. And using the right epoxy. I repair major cracks in fan housings using a low durometer industrial epoxy. The housing can vibrate with the engine and the epoxy won't fracture.

I don't know about this; according to AvE, the bigger the gob, the better the job!

The right adhesive, surface prep and dry fitting will take a lot of the anxiety away.

You got this.

I don't know how he goes about it but I find a great deal of cussing helps.

Oh... and I think vash might have glued both hands to the kayak. No update on how things went. I'm checking my MSN newsfeed for "Man enters ER with Kayak glued to hands"

If the parts that need gluing are too smooth to grasp with your fingers, you can make handles out of sticky tape. Make sure that the work area is clean and you have everything you need at the ready.
Make sure the kayak is stable with easy access to the problem.

A lot of times creating the fixture used to make something takes much longer to create than the thing itself.

Sniff the glue first, that will take care of the anxiety.

actually you roll on the contact cement on the counter top and the laminate. Let it "tack up" and then lay long dowels and flip laminate onto counter top and roll into place.

watch "The Repair Shop" on Netflix, lots of little tricks of the trade on there. Aluminum foil makes a good moldable clamping material.

We need some pics of what is going to be glued to provide several pages of our extensive insight on how best to do it!

The real anxiety starts with picking the right glue. A million possibilities and most of them are wrong.

I did it. The glue gave me a headache. It was very “boozey “ smelling.

My biggest mistake was NOT test fitting my clamps and straps first.
I test fit the part over and over. Even outlined the spot with a silver sharpie so I knew the landing spot. Lovingly sanded and cleaned the area and part.

I was shocked, no horrified (!) to discover my clamp would squirt the part forward slowly. I had to scramble and get a strap (which I hope isn’t now glued to my kayak. )

Here it is. Low hanging fruit for you more talented and less anxious people. It’s a plastic nose shield so I don’t erode a hole thru my kayak.

Glue makes a good lubricant. Clamps will teach you a lot about inclined planes.
