Stastics ... understanding an applying.

On a percentile basis, where do you think you fall in using them "properly"?

Me... I am absolutely sure I'm more adept than 99.9956% of the general population based upon my on personal sampling :D

Me?!??? 'm an expert in stastics. :D

(and, no, I do not consider myself an expert in the area. I am at the "The more I learn, the less I know" phase of learning- and that's not covid related stats either.)

I remember taking statistics in college.

I'd say that I'm better than avg (but that's not saying much).

I couldn't tell if it was a typo or you were taking a jab at a comment made somewhere else. I can'st keep up with all the other threads round here.
It's kinda perfect as is! :)

I actually can speel, tupe.... and poofread.

But just not here...

It wuz not intentional :D

This pandemic has created a new class of armchair statistics experts...I am NOT one of them, and hardly follow the news, and covid numbers.

Pretty well being an engineer and taken at least two graduate level classes.

Thankfully you don't need a phd level understanding for useful interpretation of many of data sets. According to a personal recent sub sampling around here. I would say that the distribution of adeptness is bimodal in at least one group of thread participants.

I wouldn't try to extend that estimate to the whole forum or population however, what with the extraordinary sampling bias

Our professor made us all stand up and say in unison......

The standard deviation of the sampling distribution of the mean

Never forgot it.

I am too stupid.

It's not complicated;
If everything on a Boeing aircraft isn't produced @ six sigma quality standard of deviation, they will not stay in flight @ a safe enough rate for the public to use them.

Bill Douglas 08-27-2021 12:01 PM

I was more interested in economics than statistics because the rate of return wasn't good enough.

Tervuren 08-27-2021 12:14 PM

One part of understanding stastics is recognizing that multiple stastics might be passing through a cross section.
Understanding falters or misleads by not recognizing the presence of cross threads.

The ideal wingspan of an airplane based solely on a single stastic would be an infinte wingspan.
Yet airplanes do not have infinite wingspans.
This is the problem of 2020 ongoing to today.

I used statistics to analyze why I was so broke .... crap :D

Minor was in Quantitative Methods .... lots of stats, methodology, etc. to go along with my degree in Computer Science (modeling, simulations, etc.).... and I used them both extensively over my career.

Kept me from having to get a real job too :D!
