Squeaky Dryer

Our Fridgidaire dryer started making a squeaking noise earlier this week so today I took it apart to investigate. This is the easiest dryer I've ever worked on and this is the first time I have ever had to do anything to this dryer. The dryers I have had in the past had a system of rubber rollers that the drum would sit on but this dryer has a steel ball attached to the back of the drum and that ball fits into a plastic socket and would have some grease in the socket and around the ball. I found the socket to be dried out but everything looked good with nothing worn out so I cleaned everything out, packed grease into the socket and ball, put it all back together and no squeaky squeak!!!! Yay, didn't cost me a dime!!!

Nice easy fix! That’s a slick and easy design.

Last year I had to replace 2 rollers and one shaft that the plain bearings in the rollers ride on.
Even though they are a bronze bearing I added anti seize too.

Did the belt while I was at it.

Good skills. Should be fine for the next 20 years.

My lil' dryer had a regular ball bearing setup, but easy enough I guess.

Fantastic.

Here is a pro tip. Print the instructions for disassembly and put them in a ziplock bag. Tape to the back. You with thank yourself if there is a next time.

Don’t you love it when a job like this works out?
That’s a good design. The GE dryers I used to work on had a little 1/2” diameter shaft about an inch long in place of that ball and a plastic sleeve for a bearing.

Thanks y'all. There are 10 screws to remove and the cabinet comes apart, 3 panels.
I had planned on doing some yardwork but it rained in my area so I figured, heck, I will see why this thing is squeaking, didn't think it would be something so easy. Glad it went well and the wife is happy and impressed at my handiwork. Lol.

I opted to get get a full rebuild kit for our drier from this place.
It included the ball and socket along with a bunch of other parts that wear out.

Certainly a dang good catch and excellent work! Sooo satisfying!

One question, was Bryon your photographer for the closeup, important shots?

I'd fire that photog, asap.

“Squeaky Dryer” sounds like the name of a baseball player.

I looked at the full kits that came with everything needed to change out the ball and socket, but after Inspection, nothing looked to be worn out so I just cleaned everything and packed it with new grease.
I used the dryer today and it is super quiet, so glad I addressed the squeak before it got worse!!!

I dropped a bolt out down the lint filter on mine while changing the belt. Still need to get it out.
