Nope...ever been to Reno's hot august nights? Equally huge...the west coast version of woodward. But that's not why I posted the video. Did you bother to watch?

Good..I found it funny...a Cyclops cruising next to a hellcat and other high horsepower beasts. Just fun.

We have a knock-off of the dream cruise here in Grand Rapids. (Metro Cruise)
Not as many cars (close)...but it keeps getting bigger each year. I drove my 78 SC in it one year...never again. (didn't think my clutch would make it) Stop and go for over 20 miles...never over 10-15 MPH

I bet very few of the people on Woodward Avenue had any idea what they were looking at. Those few that did probably cracked a smile. Those were the good old days for Road & Track.

I think R&T road tested the Cyclops....on April 1. Had to be late '60's early '70's. The other famous car was the Deignbay (sp) Super Chauvinistic for an April 1 road test. An imaginary British sports car that made the Renault 2CV look like a Bugatti by comparison. Can't recall if it was R&T or C&D.

Could also have been the Denbeigh Super Chauvinist Mk. IV, a sportier model…

Funny how no one mentions the genesis of the Dream Cruise. Having grown up in Detroit and in high school in the 70’s, every Friday and Saturday night “cruising Woodward” was a mainstay. Drag racing, booze, road side parties gave Woodward its reputation. It went on for years.
The Dream Cruise is a modern, white washed interpretation. I’ve been on 2 or 3 occasions. Fun to car/people watch, but it’s nothing like the old days. What is?

Of course we know what it was. It even started earlier than your era. Every decent sized town had some stretch of asphalt where kids drove up and down in endless circles. We all did it. Woodward was a little more famous because of it’s proximity to the auto companies in Detroit. I would imagine more than a few engineers snuck some thing interesting out the back door on a Friday night.
Yeah, everything’s changed. Now it’s the old farts that were kids in those days trying to relive their youth. It’s not the same. Back in the day, they were mostly trying to get laid. |

Even tiny farm towns have Saturday Night Cruises. It’s what the kids do. Guys struttin’ their stuff hoping to snag a farm girl.
Thing is in these small towns, everybody knows everybody else so it’s all one big unmentionable gag everyone is in on. |
