Surfing Photography in Kauai

Pulled out my good Sony mirrorless DSLR and 450mm lens to try my hand at some Surfer Photography. This was the first session near sunset.........

Nice shots!!

Morning walks on Maui are my favorite!
I came across a local one morning waiting patiently for just the right set to come

Just north of Kihei, referred to as Sugar Beach on the beautiful Maalaea bay.

We've hit that area about 4 times thus far, nice long walks past the last few condos heading NW, lots of empty beach and views of windmills cranking out the juice to recharge my camera- Nikon D7100 back in 2018.

Never enough Hawaii

Great shots.
They are all underexposed by a stop or two- easy to somewhat correct in post.

I took this during a surfing competition in late winter 2014, north shore Oahu. One of my favorites.

yeah I could brighten them up a bit, but it was at sunset, and I was shooting fast at 1/3200 second f5.6 with ISO set on auto. Will get out and play with the long lens more tonight.

Shot these mid day with better lighting.

These were from our condo lanai deck.

Unless you are going for the frozen water droplet look, you don't need 1/3200.
That is tough to do in low light especially at f5.6.
You can drop your shutterspeed down to about 1/1000 or so(with good technique.)
Get more light no the sensor- your pics will print better.
Beautiful images.

Same thought. I tend to like the Shutter speed = 2 x focal length rule of thumb, which would put you about 1/1000.

More often than not, I cheat and just run Aperture Priority mode, set the aperture and ISO, then let the camera figure out shutter speed.

I do like the dramatic lighting. Could just bring out the subjects in post with localized EV correction.

I really like the frozen droplet look, but in the name of science, and to appease the critics (grins) here are some at 1/1000 a second.

It's just a softer look over all.............maybe better exposed, but not what I'm shooting for those sharp crisp frozen water droplets.

getting better

Some teenagers were out surfing, all except their buddy who fell and broke his hand. Kids were ripping it up.

Back up to 1/3200 second, but pushed my ISO up to brighten them up.............I'm getting better at these action shots.!!!

While in Hawaii, you gotta get at least one sunset photo!

Will your camera allow you to bracket the shots? If you're generating RAW images, you can easily increase the exposure.

Let's see a brightened closeup of this...
