Great video... He knows his stuff but I think he undervalued that car a little.
About 15 years ago I had a chance to buy a white one for $150,000 AUD. - Privately imported, LHD. Originally German delivered! I passed because I was worried about losing money on the thing. ![]()

I watched this video a couple of days ago and it was one of the few things which has made me miss the old E I sold a decade ago. Damn! Some days I really miss the hum of the flat six.
He did seem kind of vague on the year the wheelbase was lengthened ('69). He seemed in his talk to suggest it came about as a response to the increasing engine size. Other than that, it was greatly appreciated. Best Les

When the were new, they weren't allowed to be licensed for the street in the USA...a few imported for track use only.
(edit) RS lightweight #69 is still the quickest (as opposed to fastest) Porsche I've driven. That was when it was 2nd owner's Roger K's car, around the river road loop here. That was mid 70's..maybe 1976 or '77? We were thinking of a swap...I decided no, because the RS was a bit rough after it's opriginal owner had used it as a hill climb car. I know it had airport gears at the time, and it was originally set up by Max Moritz..I was suspicious that it might be a 2.8, not a 2.7. Roger got it licensed in Oregon by applying one of those "complies with emission" plaques on the fan shroud...sneaky. Thanks for bringing back a fond memory...

It's been a long time (I'm not liking being reminded of a recent yet another birthday) since I had the long tool through the fan on on the MFI pump. I actually owned the correct factory wrenches. IDK what he was using, but to have knocked a small end piece off that extension would have ruined my day. Whatever.
Not all that impressed with this fellow's presentation. Doesn't seem as though he knows as much as he is being given credit for. Am I right or wrong here? Anyway, I remember being at one of the German Auto Fests where a Carrera RS was for sale for $105,000 and I thought the world was mad. Now at current figures, I know it is. Nothing but a rich man's game anymore. At least I can say I appreciate that the car in the video is driven. I couldn't drive that much money around here in SoCal. It would have to sit or be sold. Speaking of MFI, working on that was really one of the more satisfying chores one had to do to those cars of the era. As long as the butterflies were in good nick. |
