Schumacher On Netflix

Just watched the much heralded documentary on Netflix. Some very good stuff over almost 2 hours. Personally, I found it interesting and very moving.

A few of my takeaways:
Skill beyond belief from his youth
Incredible determination and virtually fearless on the track
Absolutely devoted to Corinna and his family
Not the German machine that people imagine him to be and an emotional man
A good friend to those he let in
A "victim" of incredibly bad luck which reeks of the highest irony

IMHO, well worth watching.

My first F1 race was Hockenheim 2002. Shumi won and was the king! The main grandstand, which is like a bowl, emptied out onto the start/finish straight.

People just loved him and applauded for what seemed an eternity.

I was a BMW guy so was supporting JPM and Ralf. But this was simply electric and something I will never forget.

Saw him a couple of years later at Nurburgring GP track. He won again. Sadly, due to the layout of that place I did not get to replicate the Hockenheim experience.

Looking forward to watching this video.

Any hints as to his current condition or do they steer clear of that?

No specifics. Dance around it but it doesn't sound good, reading between the lines.

Many years ago when I lived in Orlando the PCA had a holiday party and the guest speakers were David Hobbs and Steve Matchett . I was mesmerized listening to Matchett talking about his days working with Michael Schumacher . He said one of Shumi's character traits was the ability to analyze/remember/articulate to the engineers almost everything about a lap .

Michael would be talking to the engineers while the car data was being downloaded . Matchett said it was amazing how close the car data was to what Michael had told them . And it was lap after lap after lap . Matchett stated he never worked with anyone that could remember so much data about a lap .

I am looking forward to watching the special , like many I want to remember him at his best .

My wife and I just finished watching , I thought it was very well done and even my wife enjoyed it 😊. Watching the Senna crash brought back memories of that awful day . It's easy to forget how dangerous the sport was and still is today . The love that Michaels family has for him is undeniable . I wish them all a happy life.

We watched it last night and thought it was well done.

I must admit, I was not a Schumacher fan. I guess being a fan through the Senna era it was hard to like Michael and maybe it was partly about how ruthless he was. Toward the end of his first F1 stint I came around and could admit how good he was. Even though Hamilton has surpassed his wins, I still rank Schumacher as the F1 GOAT.

Ah yes, one of the three great Michaels of our time.

I do wish they’d just let us know whether he’s at least awake or not. I suspect not, but wish he is at least awake like Christopher Reeve. Or awake and can blink. At the same time I respect his wishes for privacy.

I realized something about myself while watching the video.
At times here on Pelican, someone will post a picture of members of a rock band from back in the day. I usually have no idea who they are or were.
When the picture of. Michael, Murray Walker and Sir Sterling Moss popped up, I didn't even have to think about it.i recognized them.
So many of the track footage I remembered watching with my FIL on Sunday mornings.

Best

It was ok.
I’m anxiously waiting for the Rubens Barichello documentary to come out.

Just kidding of course.
It is very well done. As someone who watched most F1 races in the 90s, it brought back a lot of memories.

The Schumacher - Senna rivalry would have been on for the ages.

This show reminded me of Senna's crash. Back then I think F1 was on ESPN or maybe Speedvision and coverage was terrible. No news about the crash. No internet to figure out how he was so I call the local TV station and asked for the sports department. When a guy answered, I asked for news on Senna. He said he died. It definitely put me in a funk.

The race where Senna died was broadcast live in the US, I watched it as it happened that morning. It was obvious from the broadcast that he was probably dead. It still bothers me to this day.

I watched F1 pretty religiously from about 1987 thru 2005 or so, so this documentary was very familiar. It actually caused me to see people like Eddie Irvine, David Coulthard and Damon Hill in a different light than I judged them back in the day.

I remember pretty much all of the events in the documentary. Especially when Schumacher hit Coulthard at Spa and ripped off the right front tire/suspension. What the documentary doesn't show is that Schumacher actually continued to race on three tires. And his lap times were not that bad!! They finally black flagged him (or his team called him in - I forget which).

Great show.

Watched it last night with the missus. Wow, just wow.

I was struck with just how much more competitive things were, or at least seemed to be.

I had forgotten just how close he was to winning WDC the two years before finally winning with Ferrari.

My missus noticed that Corinna was referring to Michael in the past tense throughout the entire show.
