Strociek Engineering
Wow, what a blast from the past... Anyone remember Dave Strociek? Not surprised if no one does, one would have to be pretty deep into motorcycle drag racing back in the 1980's to have even heard of him. He drag raced Shovelhead big twin and Ironhead Sportster Harleys out of Chicago. He made a bit of a name for himself with his twin carb Shovelheads and his billet aluminum top ends for Ironheads.
Well, an on-line acquaintance out of Australia who races vintage sidecar managed to score a mostly complete Strociek Sportster motor. He is going to try to complete it and then compete with it. It displaces around 1340cc's, and he expects about 130hp on alcohol. I wish him all the best, it uses a lot of bespoke parts that appear to be missing. Not many were ever finished and made to run. The astute among you will notice that the intake and exhaust have been switched to the left side. I'm not sure what he thought the advantages were, but it makes a lot of things kind of difficult. Gorgeous machine work, though: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1631243688.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1631243688.jpg |
Yes, the XR750 flat track machine. Far and a way the most dominant racing machine of any kind, be it motorcycle, automobile, boat, airplane - you name it. A 40+ year run of absolutely domination on America's half and full mile dirt ovals, with only a handful of other machines ever winning a championship. It's days are over as a racer, but what a run, from the early 1970's right up into the 2010's. Nothing else has ever dominated any sort of racing for anywhere close to that length of time.

Weird... I replied to afterburner (without quoting), and now - poof - he's gone...

That's what he does...

Here is the sidecar rig that may eventually be running this motor, assuming Gene ever gets it all together and sorted. This is from this weekends' Queensland Titles, where they run their Period 3 Unlimited Sidecar class. Current motor is, I believe, based on a '67 900 cc Sportster, stroked to over 1,300 cc's. It runs on alcohol. Main competition is a pair of Vincents, both over 1,200 cc's. Gene and his team won all four points scoring races over the course of the weekend, a clean sweep. Pretty cool stuff:
