Remember

I will never forget where I was. I will never forget those who died. I will never forget the bravery shown by those who responded. I will never forget those who died and those who still suffer physical and mental wounds as a result of the war brought upon us by those who attacked us. Remember.

. . .

Same here; I was at work in a Dallas middle school (seems like another life at this point!). Students from my first, early class were coming in and saying things about buildings being blown up in NY and I assumed they were exaggerating or being drama queens, but there were TVs in the rooms that had some local channels, so I turned to news and saw some very early coverage (not much though, until I got home from work).

I was sitting on my couch watching the Today show slowly getting ready for work as my daughter crawled around my legs. It was a beautiful day, the AC was off the windows and door were open as that gorgeou Septemebr breeze blew in off the ocean. The Today show cut away, when they came back they showed the first tower smoldering.

When the second plane hit I thought for a second how could airtraffic control let this happen twice?

I hope the families of the fallen have found peace. God bless you all.

On this morning, 20 years ago, I was teaching ROTC at San Diego State University. We had just finished PT with the cadets and we were recovering from showers, sitting in the ROTC faculty lounge, watching the morning news when this day's events happened. I later met up with 3rd Bn, 5th Special Forces Group, as a Detachment Commander, in Kuwait..ultimately going into Iraq in spring 2003. LTC Christopher Miller was the Bn Cdr (Later a MG, then A-SECDEF). I remember.

I was a Commander working as a detailer at BUPERS in Millington, Tennessee.

My assistant, we are still great friends, and I watched it unfold on the lounge TV, surrounded by other military folks.

We all knew.

The amazing thing was the amount of calls I fielded in the next few weeks from both retired and other folks who had left the service wanting back in.

I drove home to Maryland a few weeks later and stayed for a month working out of Patuxent River.

I was on one of the first Northwest Airlines flight when they opened up....Memphis was a hub for them in those days: Maybe 20 people on the plane.

So many stories, so much more I wish I could have done, friends gone.

A friend of one of our sons was in the North Tower that day, on an upper floor in the BofA offices on a trip along with his boss from Charlotte. He told us that his boss, a former Marine Captain, took charge of the floor and ordered everyone out, despite the security announcement on the PA telling people to remain on the floors. 4 of the staff remained, never to be seen again. They made their way down, helping some with disabilities to the safety of the street, and then made a bee-line to the Brooklyn Bridge to get clear of the mayhem.
Years later he got a package from the NYC Police property division containing his charred briefcase, his wallet and some melted coins, how that survived no one knows. Watching all the news footage from that day this morning on Fox News brought it all back.

I remember looking at the sky and thinking about how weird it was to not see contrails from the commercial jets. It feels a bit strange to me that 20 years later, thinking about what happened, it still brings tears to my eyes.

As you’re remembering the victims of this day 20 years ago, don’t forget to spare a thought for those that died on this day in 2012.

I remember those that gave it all. I miss them the most, especially today.

One of our guys, a Pelican, Marc Weintraub, went to a meeting in the World Trade Centre and they said to him sorry the meeting's been cancelled but we forgot to tell you. Marc said he was a little bit pissed off "but whatever..." and walked out of the building. Boof, the plane hit the building right behind him as he left. He said he had to get out of NYC after that and haven't heard of him since. I hope he's doing OK as he's a really neat guy. Owned a restaurant in the city.
