Tabs would be proud:

I think so, anyhow. I have found what may be the best thrift store in America, on Nantucket Island. Everyone knows that thrift stores in affluent areas are the best but Nantucket has the distinction of being isolated from most pickers and so uniformly rich that most locals don't shop there. The donations come in like clockwork as old people die or people just discard last year's clothes, probably by the truckload. They only have room for and keep the best stuff.

We were there for the weekend for a family wedding and my brother found the place on a hunt for shoe polish. He never found the shoe polish but instead bought a perfect pair of probably $400 dress shoes for $4.00. We both love a good thrift shop so he excitedly reported this to me. Being a last minute packer, I could not find my neckties, (shows how often I wear one these days), so I found it on Saturday morning and went in.

Along with a good selection of perfect, expensive ties, they had these slacks...not exactly Dragon Ass Jeans but pretty close, IMO.

This entire haul, including a nice pair of khaki shorts and a beautiful silk tie, (not pictured), was something like $23.00. I had previously walked into a local haberdashery, (not really all that fancy or impressive), and the khakis were all $400. It's that kind of place.

I was thinking one could access a red London phone booth for the privacy needed to access one's pant's map, but then, maybe not:

a sketchy jukebox repairman was at a Thrift shop in Palm Springs and found a vintage jukebox that was made to resemble the back half of a 56 Thunderbird.
Rear window had all the records and turn table in it.
He had the trunk up checking the inside, it was sun baked needed restoration.
The Thrift store owner started to walk up and the customer quickly closed the trunk on the juke box and cussed.
He then turned to the owner and said it was full of Rat nests.
Thrift store owner said get it out of here and cut the price in half to $500.

1) I love Nantucket.
2) Love me some thrift stores.
3) Love some killer bargains.

Summary: I get it! Nice score. Makes me want to buy a plane ticket to save a couple bucks!

I was the youngest of 4 boys. Many of my clothes are hand-me-downs. As an adult, I would never buy used clothing for myself, especially if I can afford new ones still.

I have plenty of new clothes and can afford whatever I want. The reality is that I have a lot of nice clothes and shoes that I never wear, since my wardrobe these days is casual and I have my few favorite pants and shirts that I always wear.

That said, I fully endorse recycling clothing or shoes that are still in new condition or close. As Americans, we are piggish consumers of garments, (generally speaking, not everyone), and they account for a large portion of overflowing landfills in this country. There is nothing more "green" than recycling something used as opposed to buying new. Keeping your old car and fixing it instead of buying a new jalopy is green. Recycling perfect, slightly used clothing or shoes is green.

I realize that widespread adoption of this view would really harm the economy but it's the truth. If people only bought what they needed, the economy would collapse tomorrow.

Not that long ago blue genes with holes worn in them brought $$$ in Japan.

My wife volunteers at the hospital thrift store in a high end area, Far Hills,NJ.
She is often amazed at the quality designer name apparel and jewelry that comes in.

It's difficult to get the 'death smell' out of shoes.

Jeans can be washed a couple times to get it out...or so I heard.
