Where to buy a set of beginner golf clubs?
Getting ready for retirement!!
I took golf lessons about 15 years ago and had a set of clubs. Stashed the clubs away in the dank basement when my little boy was born and haven’t picked them back up in 14 years. I recently found them and discovered the grips had deteriorated and mice had gotten into the bag. I just want to bin the set and start anew but don’t want to spend too much. Where should I shop for a set? Used from EBay or Play It Again Sports? Costco brand or Walmart specials? Where would you go for a beginner set? I’m planning on taking lessons again soon. TIA. |

Goodwill? Craigslist?

I’ve been to a couple of Goodwill stores and haven’t found anything but single clubs that’s in worse shape than mine but did still have their grips.

How hard is it to install grips? (I really don't know...)

If the irons were decent in their day you can have them regripped at a minimal cost and then pickup a new bag at any golf shop or amazon.
Otherwise, Craigslist or estate sale. Craigslist has a probability of being stolen. Estate has a probability of being older tech. Last recommendation would be a golf shop or pro shop at a small course where you'd find a trade in set - but that is something most people happen upon, and I wouldn't waste time driving to a bunch of shops on spec.

Very easy to replace grips…see YouTube. Play it Again Sports is a good idea or ask your friends if anybody wants to sell a used set. Be careful, it’s very addictive!

I'm sure you can do it yourself, but I'd just take them to a proshop. You can get a hands on feel for the grips you want, and the last time I checked, it was like $3 per club to have it done. But it's been a while. Still, a cheap option.

Buy quality clubs cheaply......don't just buy cheap clubs.
You'll want a game-improvement design, preferably less than 5 years old. Major benefits in new technology. You'll thank yourself when your scores start dropping. Shop here......talk to a service rep about want are your goals and budget. https://www.2ndswing.com/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI8qXb0_n-8gIV8waICR2-XAatEAAYASAAEgKNufD_BwE No affiliation. And beware that random craigslist clubs are often bent, (not just the shaft) ie., the lofts and lies are out of spec. |

If you are capable of playing to a single-digit handicap, then yes.

Maybe ask the pro you’re going to get lessons from.

Fitting ensures your clubs are optimized to your height, stance, swing plane, club head speed and other factors. Pros.....and the majority of those scoring sub-80, become very consistent and repetitive with their swing. Pros are robotic in their swing.
Casual golfers typically cannot replicate those variables with enough consistency for it to impact their performance (visit the local public range and see how often the typical beginner hits two balls in a row with the same trajectory and direction). ![]() Last edited by L8Brakr; 09-14-2021 at 09:40 AM.. |

A handicap in golf is an average, of multiple rounds, of strokes over/under par. Par 72, shoot 68, -4 handicap, shoot 78, +6, the two give you a +1 handicap.
I'd re-grip what I have, and get a bag. However, I'm picky. I haven't changed clubs since I was playing Jr. golf tournaments. If you can learn to hit a 1958 McGregor Silver Scot 3 iron, you can play any club you want. I play 1973-75 Wilson Staff. Edit: Slope is also included in hadnicap, it's complicated, but you get the jist of it.

Of all things being sold used, I think golf clubs lose more value over time than any other thing I'm aware of and I see a lot of used goods. Through my involvement in antiques repair I've gotten to peek into the inside world of 'estate sales'. Lot of crap goes on in that world.
But I digress. The point is that older golf clubs get tossed. Take a lesson from me here: when starting into go kart racing you want to get good enough equipment to not have to be last place, but not new. Buy new for the 2nd season if you're still wanting to win. Next best thing is to buy last year's champion's kart. |

Take your clubs to Dick's sporting goods they will regrip the clubs, Buy a cheap bag while you are there or a used bag from CL or FB market place.

It's a simple process but it is harder then it looks. Dislove th solvent strtech the grip on, line it up all before the solvent evaporates.
Dicks charges like $1.50 to regrip plus the grip $2.00 additional if you buy them there? I have Calloway's bought my own OEM grips took them to Dicks and they put my grips on my clubs while I walked around. I had four or five clubs regripped it took about thirty minutes cost about $10.00 (plus my grips) total. My grips were straight and my hands weren't sticky.
