RTA Kitchen Cabinets
Me and the Mrs. are contemplating doing the kitchen over, its been over 30 years since I did the kitchen when we moved in. There is a real good chance that we will be moving closer to our daughter after I retire in about 1½ years. Therefore I do not want to sink a ton of money into the kitchen.
I am in the construction business, industrial and municipal plumbing and mechanical work so I do not do any residential work and am not really familiar with current trends. I have looked on YT and online and narrowed down what we are looking for. I think Ready to Assemble cabinets would be a good idea. I used to build cabinets and furniture as a hobby years ago and am fully tooled up so assembling is not a problem. Plus I have a pool young strong guys at the ready to help. I want to replace the cabinets in kind and hopefully reuse the granite countertops that my wife loves. So what say the BBS brain trust? Who has done RTA cabinets and any recommendations as to where to purchase? TIA, Cheers Mike

I'd say if you are going to be replacing appliances - you best get shopping and get them on order now. It might be 6 months or more before they show up.

I have them. About 10 years old and still looking good. Plywoold boxes. Solid 3/4 wood face frames. The doors have solid wood frames with MDF raised panels. The raised panels look like real wood. They look great for the price. The stain/finish is not as good as a custom cabinet but so bad that anyone notices. Much better than the particle board stuff at the box stores. For $25 they will send you a sample door. Its been 10 years but think I got them here.

All are imported from China, so find yourself a importer that may sell to you in NY. I know most are here in CA because we are closer to the west, but I am sure they are in NY also. Get those RTA cabinets and start putting them together. Cheaply built, yet, most are plywood boxes and solid, painted wood doors. Not sure about salvaging the granite tops? Its a crap shoot. One lift of the crowbar, it just might crack. The new quarts tops are cheap, 350 for a piece of prefab top. Install out here is 250 -300 bucks per piece. Some of those cabinets places will put those cabinets together and hang them for you for not too much money. Goodluck

A lot of it depends on the assembler/installer.
I had them installed last year, made to order locally. Very good value and quality and would do it again. ![]() ![]() Last edited by sammyg2; 09-19-2021 at 11:41 AM.. |

If you have Menards nearby, check out Klearvue cabinets. The boxes come assembled and the you choose doors, drawers, trim etc. from their choices. I did them for my garage and used the red plate look and thought they were pretty good for what they are. They were also made in the US at that time- still could be.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll start measuring and doing a CAD layout. Going to start the planning phase. Cheers

You can design it on CAD or paper / pencil just to give youself an idea, but I think its best if you just take the dimensions to them and have them input what they stock. What you have in mind will be different since its all pre-fab.
I install those Chinese made plywood, solid wood doors cabinets in all my rentals. They put them together and installation is included in the price. They all avg about 5-7000 bucks, installed. Most times, new quarts counters are installed also instead of tile. Some of them have been going well for 7-8 years now without issues. I own a cabinet shop, and I do not build my own for my rentals due to cost. What you want are solid drawers and good slides, not the stamp steel junk. Good luck. Give a shout if you have more questions. |

Mike, sent you a PM with my supplier. They have a branch/showroom near you in Westbury.
You can buy them knocked-down or assembled. Decent quality, wood frames and plywood(no particleboard) frames. If you are 'in the business' they should sell to you direct. IDK about your area, but around here all we have been using is white craftsman/shaker.
