How hard can it be to throw a pitch?

I see this all the time, although this one is worse than most. Rarely do they get the ball over the plate, it seems. Hasn't anyone ever played catch?

Embarrassing for an athlete in their prime. I suck at baseball and I can generally throw it in a straight line. You’d think he’d have practiced at least a little bit.

Like many things in life, if you have not thrown a ball in a while it is harder than it looks. As a kid I was pretty good at throwing dirt clods in a dirt clod "war" with friends. I have not thrown a ball or rock or much of anything in many decades.

If I was going to throw out a ball in public like that I would certainly practice a bit before hand. The pros make it look easy, but that is why they get the big bucks.

It shouldn't be that hard HOWEVER Connor grew up overseas and my guess is baseball is very foreign to him. Probably along the same lines of if Americans did a ceremonial penalty kick at a soccer game most would likely shank it when 99% of Europeans would have no issue with doing that.

That and he is so rich he probably doesn't GAF if he can throw a ball.

During my college years I used to umpire slow pitch softball, which was huge in the South back in those days. One time after a ball was fouled off out of play I reached in my bag for a new one and thought I'd whip it to the pitcher. Wild Pitch on my part over pitcher's head. Never again, always handed it to catcher after that.

How embarrassing....I hope the fans at his next fight remind him.

...and now "I" will attempt to dunk a basketball....

I will not be embarassed after that display of athleticism :D

You just never know. My younger brother, who was a very good pitcher at the D-1 level, once threw out the first pitch at a MLB game.

Although he'd been in - and pitched his way out of - plenty of tight situations during his playing days, when it came time to deliver what was essentially a BP pitch, he totally choked and threw the ball about 50' 6" (and about two feet off line).

He couldn't get off the field fast enough.

I'd prolly air ball a free throw if a Million was at stake ... in a loose uniform :D.

Somewhat related story;
When I lived in South Florida the Marlins used to hold open tryouts for guys to come and see if they could get a hit off a real major league pitcher. I think it was really set up so the real big league players could laugh at the want-a-be's. All the loud mouths from the cheap seats were given their chance to come down and prove that they could do it better. Very few balls were hit. It always looks easy when you're watching until you get out there and try it yourself.

When I was a kid, I got to throw out the first pitch at a minor league game. That was one of the most memorable nights of my childhood.

Can still throw a decent fastball, but doubt I could manage a good slider or curve these days. What's harder for me is pitching to my kids when they were playing little league. Taking the heat OFF and still keeping ball on target is tough.

I used tennis balls when pitching to my kids when they were youngsters. This allowed me to throw pretty hard and for them to get accustomed to seeing velocities exceeding anything they were going to face until reaching the babe Babe Ruth level.

The combination of a smaller ball coming in hard and, of course, Dad's high-level hitting instruction, allowed them to feast on the relative pus they faced in games.

Can't really get a tennis ball to do much, but until they started seeing junk at 12 or 13 it made no difference.

I saw a HS pitcher who finally got put in the game not be able to throw to the catcher without a ground hop. Very accomplished kid, but stress won the day.

I used to be pretty good in sports including baseball. Nowadays, though, like early this summer, I had an opportunity to throw an errant ball back to some kids playing catch.

Somewhere along the line, as I embarrassingly found out, my throwing arm decided to identify as a girl.

A930Rocket 09-24-2021 05:30 PM

But look how hard and fast the ball was thrown!🙄

I hurled a baseball with some real mustard on it into one of those radar booths at the Oakland Coliseum. I'm pretty sure it was well into the 60s.

berettafan 09-24-2021 05:52 PM

Can’t recall his name but there is a MLB pitcher famous for not throwing to first. Can’t do it. Total mental block.

Have seen catchers in hs and recruitment camps completely unable to make a pitch from the mound but have no trouble throwing a kid out stealing 2nd.

It’s a weird thing. Very mental.

I can throw just as hard at 64 as I did at 19.

The ball doesn't travel as fast, but I'm throwing just as hard.
