911's and kids, it's great
While this has probably been discussed in the past, what the hay!
While I am never out to "impress" anyone out driving the 911 I do really love the reaction from kids, especially boys between 9-12 yrs. old. I can be cruising past some boys playing ball and the bat hits the ground, their mouths are all open and many times I get a multiple thumbs up! I have received many "drive by" requests from the young onlookers from "burn out man" to "cool car". It just amazes me that kids know the shape of a 911. I guess it shouldn't though because when I was their age I would practically break my neck to get a glimpse of a 911 I loved them and didn't know why (I do now!). Of course those were the days of: space food sticks, tang, and burger chef and jeff. I used to be cool to set in your car and eat, now the cops tell you to move along. Damn I am getting old. ![]() |

Tood,
Quite true, when I pick up my kids (grade school), in the p-car, all the kids seem to stop what they are doing to look. One or two, will usually approach me and mumble something like "cool car". I for one, like (and encourage) the idea of our children being drawn to cars instead of some of more violent aspects of our society.

Before I got my 911, I had a '67 912 Targa that a school bus used for a brake (while I was in it). While the rear was messed up, the longitudals cracked and engine mounts torn, I was only shaken up a bit and drove it 70 miles to the body shop for inspection before the insurance company totalled it. To me, that is a testimony to a pretty stout car. What a lot of folks seem to forget is, (that for the earleir cars) part of the design basis was the idea you can buy your Porsche from the dealer, and with minimal prep, drive it safely the next day on a track. Can you do that with most other cars, even those sold today?

My now 5 yr old, at 3, knew what a Porsche was, and could say Porsche. I was proud.

My first car ride ever was in my 356 - on the way home from the hospital after being born. In Mom's arms no less - no baby seat, etc. And my daughter (2 1/2 y/o) has been enjoying rides around the yard (lots of acres) for more than a year.
To help keep the faith going, I tend to give young kids special treats with the car - let them sit in it, parking lot rides, etc. For example, I was picking up a few things at the FLAPS (oil filter, etc) and there was a 5 y/o kid there with his dad. Living in a very rural area, the little kid had never seen a Porsche in real life and was very impressed - "Oh WOW that's a Porsche! Does it go fast? Did it cost a lot?" type things. After getting permission from his father (who looked on thru the windows of the shop), I took him for a quick spin around the parking lot - never going above 20 or so, but doign some very tight cornering (remember ghia track racing?). Kid gets out of the car iwth a BIIIIG smile on his face... and I think his finger prints are now permamently impressed in the "oh *****" handle. I doubt he'll every drive anything other than a Chevvy truck, but I also doubt he will ever forget that afternoon either.
