I think I've finally bought bad gas
 

Went to a casey's to fill up the tank on a beater crown vic. Drive around the block and get to the local Walmart. Where it gave a crank but no start. Call a tow truck and tow it home. Car starts but bogs down with throttle immediately after getting off the tow truck. I pull the fuel filter and out comes black gunk and water.... new filter in and still no run. Probably clogged pump. I left my number with the kid working the counter at Casey's i bought 17.5 gallons of gas at..... Question is. Anyone have luck getting a gas station to fix them selling contaminated gasoline?

Was it a national brand? If you call around to local service stations and find other people with the same problem after filling up you will have some leverage. Sort of looks like used oil in there.

Yeah Casey's is like a kwik trip. Regional chain. I'm not holding my breath on them fixing it at all....
No oil, just dirt, gas and water.

See if you can locate others that experienced the same thing. Use the newspaper. Ask around. Word gets out.

I've seen diesel in underground tanks. That'll kill 20 cars before it's caught. And depending on the car, can cost thousands to rectify.

It might also be water & crud from a leaky tank. Or a truck driver that decided to "cowboy" pump a load of God-knows-what and let the next truck load of gas clean out his truck.

Contact the local news stations they eat that up

I have bad gas all the time..even the dog runs out of the house..even after licking his azz.

Surely someone from some State Agency inspects the pumps on a yearly or so basis. The pump should have some kind of sticker on it for measuring and vending correctly.

But that's not what concerns you.

What does concern you is that the same State Agency that certifies the pumps is more than likely the same State Agency you call when you suspect you bought a bad tank of fuel.

In Mississippi, it comes under the direction of Agriculture and Commerce. I've called them in the past on an instance where I thought I bought a bad tank of fuel. They sent the inspectors out to the station and took a sample the next morning. On that occasion, they found no water in the fuel and I had a mechanical issue instead of bad fuel. But recently, the neighbor's grand kid had issues with the same station after fueling up his fairly new Z car. He went through the motions with the State Agency and they confirmed water in the fuel. Supposedly the station will pick up the tab to repair his Z car.

NOW.....this is the perfect thread to mention this, as I've been helping my 91 year old Korean War Vet neighbor with his riding mower that wouldn't run. Finally came down to water in his fuel. And he had 2 large jugs about 8 gallons worth.

What do you do with 8 gallons of gasoline that's contaminated with water?

You go get a Mr. Funnel! About $22 (for the 3.5 GPM version) at the local Tractor Supply store. I'm telling you. How this has existed for 13 or more years without my knowledge is beyond me! The damn thing actually works like a champ! Used it just today. HIGHLY recommend!

If an underground tank is contaminated, then other cars should experience problems as well. At least this is how Casey’s will see it. These fuel suppliers really struggle when they have a 20,000 gallon tank of fuel and only one customer complains of bad gas.

Weights and measures.....usually a County agency. Also the Air Pollution guys.

GREAT POST!!! I, like you, have never heard of this tool but I am getting one. Interestingly, diesel fuel is highly hydroscopic as it easily absorbs water from moisture in the air. This funnel works for both gasoline and diesel fuel. My diesel tractor and gas-powered equipment say thank you sir!

Most of those el cheapo gas stations dont give a care what you buy from them, as long as achmed is making money off of stupid mericans, hes happy as a fox in a hen house.

So, IF (a big if) you can get a syphon hose to the bottom of your tank where the water collects, and run what comes out through one of these? Maybe save yourself a big clean out bill?

It looks like it's not too big of a job on the crown vic to pull the tank. However, I do enjoy a good short cut. Looks like i can get a hand in the tank with the pump out while only disconnecting a couple hangers... bought a new pump/ couple filters for piece of mind. I was going to just let that contaminated gas evaporate in buckets, but I'll see how it looks. Might have to stop at tractor supply and get a mr funnel.

My performance review for the "Mr. Funnel" in the application I needed it for is thus:

I needed to get the water out of 2 partially full Jerry cans of gasoline. Using a very large clear glass jar, the gasoline was poured from the Jerry can through the funnel into the large glass jar. Holding the jar up to the sunlight it was clear (indicative) that the water did not pass through the funnel. The now clean fuel was dumped from the jar into a separate Jerry can. What's left in the funnel should be contaminates including water. Toss that in a separate clear jar. Repeat the process. When all done, the jar with the contaminants was run through the funnel one last time into the big jar then into the Jerry can. This left one final "toss" of what was left in the sump of the funnel.

Now, it became clear to me that just dealing with water in the fuel, a big glass jar was really all that was needed. The fuel and water separation in the jar was very noticable. The fuel could have been just poured out "off the top" of the water into a Jerry can. But that Mr. Funnel it sure is spiffy!

I do like the idea. I'm thinking i could get another bucket and use that as a separation station. I'm not sure of how much crud I'll be pulling out of the tank yet.


Another interesting aspect of gasoline is the polarity with water. Water can still be suspended in the fuel until it separates due to density. Prolly doesn't mean much at this point in time, and will run fine either way. Might just do a solvent layer separation for my needs. But that mr funnel could be used for all my small engine stuff that i have. I waste a lot of gas evaporating it instead of reusing it in.

A situation. When I was a teen three white trash fullas were pissing into the fuel tank of my ford escort in the pub car park. Big Maori guy (Rex Rimene) said what's up then ran outside and pulverised the three white fullas. I thought I'd cause further trouble for the white guys so I told the police there are three nearly dead guys in the pub carpark and what had happened. LOL (1970's) they weren't too concerned about the three trash fullas but gave good advice regarding the car. they said pour a bottle of methylated spirts into the fuel tank and it "mixes" with the water (urine) then feeds trough the fuel system and burns off OK in the engine. I had the car for a few more years and everything seemed fine. So I guess it worked.

WTF? LOL! Dude where the hell do you live? You must be in BFE to have people urinate in your fuel tank? LOL! What the heck. You would get a 9mm pulled on you around these parts.

Bottom Left Corner of the World and Maori dude are the give away. Probably not too many folks with 9mm down there.

If someone pissed in your tank and you didn't happen to witness it you really don't get the opportunity to pull out the 9mm on them. How would you ever know?
