It's subjective. I thought Goldfinger brought a lot to the table. The Aston Martin DB5, Goldfinger (Gert Frobe was dubbed over), Oddjob, Jill Masterson getting painted gold, the gold smuggling Rolls Royce, the golf game, the Lincoln Continental "pressing engagement" (a scandal in the day), and of course, Pussy Galore.

Goldfinger was also up there. Iconic for sure.

One of my favorites as well, the only thing that bugs me is that the DB5 had bullet proof glass and he turned away when granny pulled the Tommy gun. He could have driven straight out.

Steve Carlton 10-08-2021 08:40 PM

Well, they certainly laid to rest any doubt about the DB5 glass this time.

I just saw it and it was good, certainly not great. It runs too long and there's a certain something missing. I thought the lair had a little Dr. No in it.

That was a looong movie! I thought the sub base reminded me of Stromberg's base in The Spy Who Loved Me.

James Bond is just a government assassin sent out to preserve corporate monopolies from small business competitors.
The evil masterminds only do those bad things because they know what is a natural result:war.
They have loads of hard workers understanding their unique world vision to build a better society and preserve humanity.

Dorthy from Wizard of Oz is a foreign fighter who recruits domestic terrorists to bring down the government.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service

For me, one of the better movies, helped in part by the ending and the final song
by Louis Armstrong "We have all the time in the world". Great ending.

Damn that Blofeld!!! Long Live Diana Rigg

Can we talk about this last one now ? Will try for no spoilers..

I didn't like it very much, it's not awful, just not as good as you'd have hoped it to be... past the first 10 minutes anyway. The italy motorcycle/bridge/DB5 stuff was nice... After that, same old story, same old clichés, way way too long, not imaginative, not "fun" like a MI movie, all over the place.. In the first movies, Craig had more of a "bourne" feel to him and I liked that, he hurt, he messed up, now it's back to "so easy, never gets hurt, stops to have a martini mid-gunfight" silliness... And the ending makes zero sense to me (aside from contract issues obviously)... Not gonna spoil it but clearly an EMP was a possibility that would have worked fine for the purpose at hand, and they could have gone that route...

Oh, and the new 00x agent does not do it for me at all, no charisma whatsoever... 2 pee breaks long, the best part for me was the "dune" preview (oh and Ana de Armas rotating kill on the floor, nice stunt).

Deschodt 10-11-2021 09:31 AM

I kinda wish they reboot this in the past... imagine, a bit more realism, cold war, and 60s decors and car chases... Would be sweet to watch... Like a bond 60s version of atomic blonde would be sweet.

Spoilers from here on out

I, for one, thank you. Expectation management is key. I'll still watch it but I'll wait.

Best.

Steve Carlton 10-11-2021 11:28 AM

I think low expectations will be a good thing. I'd recommend seeing it in a theater vs TV, so you might as well see it before you find out what the spoilers are. I wouldn't mind seeing it again. A lot of times I like movies better the second or third time.

I also sometimes like movies more the second time around. Or, I may see them the first time and like them, but then see even more stuff to like subsequent times.

The first time I saw Zoolander, I didn't get it. I'm not sure if I was in a weird mood or what, because the second time that I saw it, I thought it was hilarious.

Well, I had very low expectations for this flick, it was only because I had a few movie gift cards that my cheap ass went to the theater.
I will admit, I was pleasantly surprised, but still feel that there is no way in hell that chick can replace 007.

WPOZZZ 10-11-2021 10:46 PM

Amazing how Ana de Armas kicks ass in that slinky dress without a wardrobe malfunction.

Steve Carlton 10-11-2021 11:46 PM

Post-spoiler alert comments...

Safin's character is undeveloped, as well as his credentials. But Rami did well with what he had to work with.
Why is Bond always on sabbatical or retired lately? C'mon.
The scene where Safin spares Madeleine Swann was cool with her under the ice looking up to him. Some symmetry with him being perhaps spared by her father.
Disappointed to see Felix Leiter killed. He and his CIA operatives could have been great spin-offs.
Agree with Byron- the placeholder 007 was weak. No more 00 for her! I'm glad she gave the ID back, though.
I like the current Moneypenny, Q, and M.
They do a great job with the cars lately- enjoyed the V8 Vantage. Cool power slides in the DB5 look alike.

I posted the same thoughts in the other Bond thread--instead of trying to stay ahead of the PC curve, (which Bond is certainly NOT) go back to the early 60s and show some different Bond adventures, old-school spy stuff, throw in a few gadgets then progress through the 70s and 80s--one could get many more films set in these time frames while allowing Bond to be Bond.

white85carrera 10-12-2021 06:31 AM

saw it last night at an IMAX, enjoyed it for what it was. one silly nitpick and one silly question:

007 orders 2 vodka martinis, shaken not stirred, at the "event". what the bartender brought was certainly not shaken, looked very gently stirred.

what are the chances the daughter turns out to be next gen Bond?

RANDY P 10-12-2021 07:21 AM

Just a mish-mash of elements from Craig's other films, no plot really developed, some frankly silly action scenes.

Weakest of the Craig series. meh.
