I don’t watch much TV, maybe something on Netflix an hour a week. However, I do like movies in theaters, and bike racing on the computer screen, and YouTube videos are pretty useful when you’re trying to figure out how to do/fix something.

Sadly, I don’t read books much nowadays either. I read all the time but it’s magazines, papers, work stuff. I have a huge pile of books I meant to read but am now basically just collecting.

Or a TV Anchor?

Yes, I could give up TV. I own many, many books, and the e-reader is a brilliant invention for conserving space.

However, if I gave up TV I would seriously miss watching live sports and discovering great old movies.

It is how I grew up.
TV is one of those things I wasn't allowed as a kid.
And unlike someone of the other things I wasn't allowed; I've never had TV.
I don't like being over at houses that leave TV's playing.
Life is better without it.

Unfortunately Utube is mostly promoting trash these days.
Hard to get a decent recommended.

I do some reading now and then.
Most pleasant part is that having electricity isn't required.
Take a book out and climb a hill.

I don't see this as an either or.

Why not do both?

I learn a lot from TV and also always have several books I'm reading simultaneously.

I'm single and thus perhaps have more freedom to do with my time what I want.....whatever it is.....

TV will hinder those in its grasp from attaining either.

10 + books a month. News on the net, the librarians know me by sight.....screw commercial TV. Football and MLB on the net.

I'm the guy at the bar in the afternoon with a book. Yes I get laid....

Occasionally I'll watch the local news service but other than that I don't watch TV at all (More than 20 years now)
Movies on Blu Ray or other formats? .. Yes and YouTube for the stuff I'm into.

The rest of my time is Pelican, cooking, doing house, yard work, fixing, servicing my cars and multiple bicycles.
I ride most days but rarely on the worst Winter days. Also surf when I can but not so much lately.

And reading A LOT. Fiction and non fiction. I've had a thing for Shakespeare since high school.
- You ether get it or you don't but if you do there's nothing else like it.

Don't own a TV but couldn't be without YouTube. Just read The God Equation, a light read on string theory but every night I would have to go to YT to get a better understanding of some of the concepts.

Read NYT and WaPo daily though certainly not in depth.

Wish I could read more.

I was at a friend's recently and we watched TV. I honestly have no idea how people do it.

do watch a little Amazon. Go to the movies (IRL) a lot.

Didn't have a TV in the house until I was 13. Did have a library card and an account at a local bookstore my parents would pay off monthly.

Wife is total opposite, TV in every room of the house growing up, often on 24/7.

Even now, it has been years since I've watched TV other that what I catch from walking past when the kids or wife are watching. Usually have a book or two going at once, as well as a Discworld fanfic addiction

Confession. I do watch the American tv channels for the politics. Very entertaining.:)

I guess because I was brought up watching TV every evening I am stuck in the same rut now.
A bit of a waste of a life when I think about it.

It's not the medium - it's the information.

great, good, bad, or ugly.

In the summer between 7th and 8th grade, we were instructed to read 2 books and write book reports about them. That was a good assignment. But that was in the late sixties.
Teachers probably couldn't even assign that today.

That sparked a lifelong love of reading.
That summer I discovered Roman History. The first book I read on the subject was Outlines of Roman History by HF Pelham. Published in 1893.
Years later I found a copy in a used bookstore. It is sitting on my bookshelf in my office.

We have power outages in our mountain cabin and this allows time to read as long as the batteries or candles hold out. I rather enjoy them.

So yes, I could easily switch back to books.
The world would be a better place without un-social media.

I'm not a big TV watcher. I gave up on many sitcoms especially the ones where the male lead is portrayed as a idiot. I will watch Big Bang Theory re-runs. I watch movies on either Netflix or Amazon, occasional sports, car shows, the 6pm local news and some programs on PBS. My TV watching is very limited. All the other stuff is noise.

I do read, I will buy mostly used editions and donate them when I'm finished. I tried audio books but I like the feel of turning pages. History is my favorite subject.

masraum 10-08-2021 09:56 AM

In addition to Sci-Fi and fantasy, I also have had periods of reading history, historical fiction and even technical/textbook type books.

Yeah, I could manage. We got rid of 40-60% of our books when we downsized, and then got rid of a few more after a year or two. The only problem with starting to re-acquire is having a place to put them, and since we are likely to move again, moving books is a huge PITA!

I'm actually OK reading in electronic format. I've read several on an iPad. My wife had an ereader with the paperwhite screen, but those screens are all so darn small. I'd rather have something bigger so I could get more text on the page. They do now, make some larger models, I think, but having an extra devices that's essentially a one-trick pony is not appealing.

That makes sense.

Between the Net, TV and books, I'd say I use them in that order timewise. It goes like this: I'll look something up, then find a YouTube about it, and if I really want to dig into it deeper, I'll buy a used book. That's on subjects that are germane to what I'm currently doing or interested in.

Then I get tired of the routine and look for something else. Right now I'm watching various series on British historic home (castle, church, etc.) restoration for residential use. Not learning a lot since I could host the show, but it's fun.

But I can be a Downton Abbey fan as well.
