Hi, does anyone have any knowledge about the transaxle on a 1971 saab sonett 3??
mine quit on me back in 1981. It popped out of gear while driving and would not move in any gear. I pulled the motor(v-4)and trans. back then and every thing has been in my garage for 40 years! I want to put her back together and drive her again. I don't know how to diagnose that trans as far as fix or get another trans. if i can even find one? seems like there was a problem with the lever that engaged/disengaged the "freewheeling"feature on the transaxle?? Any input/advise/thoughts/opinions is all appreciated. I just joined the forum 20 mins. ago, my 1st post. If i'm FN up and doing this wrong please correct me/shread me whatever. I want to do this the right way, not here to piss anyone off. thanks, steve |

Welcome to the forum.
There may or may not be someone knowledgeable on Sonnets here. If so perhaps they'll chime in. Have you had any luck searching for a Saab Sonnet forum?

Yeah, call be Bonehead. An obvious NEWB. Clearly I don't know how this system works, and no, I did no research on how this fourm works. I just joined and started a thread without thinking how to respond to individual comments that I recieve. So until my brain kicks in, I'm gonna do it like this:
Steve C. - Lancaster,Ca. KNS - LEAKYSEALS951 chimed in. His knowledge is still under review. No, I have not found a sonett forum yet. just got in the pool, only ankle deep. And thanks for the welcome. LEAKYSEALS951 - A total loss? Maybe so, maybe no. Nice 71 you have. Why do I get the feeling that you may know where to get parts but not willing to give any information? That's ok, I have parts you need too. Steve C. - Swedish Supra? Supra is faster, but the sonett is more fun to drive! |

I’d start with finding a service manual.
Might have to brush up on Swedish though.

We all mean well. LEAKYGASKET is just joking. Welcome to the forum and don't take us too seriously. This place can be an incredible resource. You'd be surprised sometimes.
Well, you're not too far from Svensson in Lafayette. Larry there seems to really know his stuff, so I'd recommend giving him a call. Super nice guy. https://svenssonautomotive.com/

Here is 162 pages in English, probably some good info therein....

Gearbox adjustments begin on page 100.
The actual tear down info is contained in the Saab V4 service manual though.

The freewheel part is not very big. It likely grenaded from the prodigious torque. Maybe you could lock it out….

If you can't find parts or someone to work on the transaxel you may have to resort to a tranny swap if possible
like from a Honda Civic or a complete engine and tranny swap |

Someone on Swedespeed will be able to help you.
There's also some Saab forums, saabnet would be my first choice.

I can't help you with any of it, but do know of a Swedish car mechanic near by my home, about 7 miles, if you want to hump that over the hill into LA (Pasadena to be exact).
