Fuel pump splice

I am replacing fuel pump on my son’s 2001 Miata. I bought an after market fuel pump which I am pretty sure the wiring harness won’t work. I will have to splice the wires on the fuel pump. Now the tricky part. The fuel pump is in the fuel tank. What can I use to cover the splices? Heat shrink tubing, liquid tape, other?
Thanks

Are you able to replace the wires completely? I would not trust many insulators submerged in fuel.

Or buy a pump that is not tank mounted.

Looking at the fuel pump, the two wire connectors on the fuel pump are exposed male connectors so I’m not sure it matters since exposed connectors.
The fuel pump is in the tank for an 01 Miata. Not sure why they would do this but it is what it is.

In the tank is normal for FI cars, but there are lots of aftermarket pumps that aren't.

Exposed connectors are not an issue. A splice that can short to ground is not good.

Thanks for responding. I guess I’ll just get a Mazda pump. Better safe than sorry.

Boy…I’d feel so much better using an OEM pump that plugs into the stock harness. Submerged in gasoline. What could possibly go wrong.

Can you return the aftermarket pump and get the correct one?

Update…we must be posting at the same time. Looks like you’re heading in a far less explosive direction!
