IF the solid walnut dining table I ordered a few weeks ago in representative, that tree is worth about 100 billion dollars (though some assembly required).

Some say that that is a sure sign of a hard winter season coming.
I hope not.

Pushing a 6 cu/ft wheelbarrow, full of walnuts, 100 yds away...is not my idea of a good afternoon.

I have better things to do.

Not that it is a huge help, but since you've got a tractor, you should get a trailer for the tractor that includes the ability to dump.

I've got one of these or something like this. I think it was about $150. I can tow it with my zero turn. I think the "tow hitch" was about $20 on Amazon. I think mine is small, only 6cuft, but they make larger models. And they dump like a dump truck.

measured by "board feet" which technically is cubic inches. But I get what you were going for. :D

Found these with a little quick searching, hope they help. The Agrifab one is mainly used for leaves but the others are for gathering nuts. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...2178ec8dcf.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...d08f9f63cc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...99b3df9101.jpg

although that looks like a good item....my problem is getting the walnuts from the ground into the wheelbarrow/or wagon.
It can be a back-breaker easily.

the ability to dump...is a non-issue to me....but I appreciate the help.

Do any of those manly-looking weapons of yardwork come in pink? If not, Mrs j37 would not be caught dead using them is my guess.

Maybe I need to find the right person/manufacturer.

I'd suggest you keep exploring that option. As other have posted, black walnut is a very desireable wood for many things. Maybe a seller of black walnut lumber could give you leads?

https://www.thelumbershack.com/pages/information

You also might check local lawn services...since it's only a once per year problem, might not cost too much to hire the job done.

Father time has me taking out that option more often lately. I turn 78 next month, God willing.

Sorry for the crappy looking pictures, I couldn't seem to link the website to this thread, so I just took screenshots.

Haha, rattlecan pink spray paint would solve that problem. Lol.

I have found sprouted nuts everywhere around my property. I pull them and there is always a walnut attached. They are a disease!
No thanks to the ground squirrels.

We can all complain about having too much but that is self-limiting.
The world 400 years ago offered so much more.

Zeke 10-11-2021 04:31 PM

I think I'd try anticipating the nuts falling and place a type of netting that would allow for drainage and air and yet be able to be picked up walnuts and all. Obviously one big net would be a PITA.

When I did any kind of demolition I used many smaller drop cloths to catch the debris. I would layer them and take them out just when they were full but manageable exposing the next layer.

We had a big tree like that on our property when I was a child and I collected walnuts like these, cracked them and sold the meats. There was huge demand and I had orders for more than I could delver. My hands were always were black from handling them...as were some of the other kids I went to school with. Surely you can find someone that will come pick them up after school every day like I did (so the squirrels did not get them first).

If one has a significant amount of wooded property, it is a good idea to spread a lot of the nuts across it each year. Your kids will be wealthy. Each tree can be worth thousands (if not expected to be contaminated).

bmcuscgr94 10-11-2021 06:14 PM

This is what I use, but I have 18 acres of walnuts.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1634004770.jpg

And we put them in these:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1634004832.jpg

stevej37 10-11-2021 06:16 PM

Each nut on the tree is about a small apple size.
The green soft exterior is about an inch thick and is black and stinky.
Under that is the hard inner walnut shell which houses the walnut.

The inner walnut meat can be tasty when dried and salted.

So much work involved with getting to the nut that people lose interest.
Can buy them in the store for a very low price instead.

black walnut rootstock with a different variety grafted on. When we replanted 20+ years ago we sold the burls (black walnut rootstock) for a enough money to pay for the replanting.

Nuts in the carts have hulls/husks still on them. We have a small plant where we remove the hulls and dry them for shipment form final processing.

stevej37 10-11-2021 06:36 PM

Interesting.
The final product is what we get in the bag?...or is it the whole inner nut?
Drying them must take a lot of heat.

The black walnuts are pretty expensive (unlike CA walnuts)...they are valued for their intense flavor. And, if you have a tree, free other than labor. It is not like there are lots of safe ways a youngster can earn money from home at their own speed. Surely there is some value in learning the value of money and work today as it was when I was young.

If you have mre than a few, you can also take them to a "hulling and buying location" if there is one locally:

If you use them yourself, you remove the hull, crack the nut with a hammer and use what is inside. They don't really need drying/heat. The hull starts to decompose pretty quickly making them pretty easy to remove. Once the black stuff is gone, they are plenty dry. The husks make for a pretty good herbicide if you have the need...but messy.

Yes, in the bag or more likely in something already prepared like a pie crust or snacks. that's what our variety is best for.

Once through our little plant they go into drying trailers (Peerless) and we have a gas burner and fan that circuities hot air through them. We have to hit 8% mostirue orthe big processing plant won't take them.

Once dry we load them into semi trailers and they haul them to the processing plant.

^^^ That is a great video.
Surprising how much hands-on is used/needed in the growing stage.

I live in a rural area. The school bus doesn't even stop within a mile.

Picked up another 6 wheelbarrows full today. The tree is over half empty now....hooray!

Where are those farmer's market people when you need them.

My mom had two walnut trees and it was a lot of work to take the outer layer off and dry them, so I understand why not.

That's a lot of nuts! I can see why you're wanting a "better way" to get rid of them.
