Mustang II 141 tooth flexplate
I recently traded my cafe racer for a 1962 Fairlane 500 4 door. I received the car with the drivetrain out, an original cruise o matic 2 speed, a C4 tranny and a 2500 KM rebuilt mustang 302.
When I attempted to fit the drivetrain, my flexplate was too large for the bell housing. Which was weird, as I know i had the smaller of the two flexplates availabe for that engine/tranny combo (302/C4), the 157 tooth plate. Well, a bunch of frustrating research later revealed the existance of the Mustang II reduced size bell housing, that needs to be paired with a 141 tooth plate. That was only made for 3 years. And that is only occasionally supplied by the aftermarket. So, before I pull my hair out and search down another C4 in standard configuration, I thought it prudent to tap the brain trust here and see if anyone might have a source for the 141 tooth flexplate. Fingers crossed! I do want to use the Mustang II C4 if i can, as it has a higher stall Tq converter, and i already have it on hand. |
I have a buddy that manages part of NPD's warehouse in Ocala... sending him a text now

Much appreciated!

And.... they have no Mustang II parts. Buddy has no idea as to where you could source one either....
Good luck with the hunt! |
It looks like ATP and Pioneer make or have made them.
Maybe just whack 16 teeth off of the one that you've got with a hammer? |
Lol, i did think of that.....
Yes ATP and Pioneer are the guys, just very spotty production. I am going to reach out to Pioneer directly, all their vendors are indicating up to 6 month lead time. |
Isn't the bell housing separate / unbolt from the trans?

The bell housing can be changed yes. The cost of changing the bell housing and procuring a torque converter makes it unappealing. Basically I find the flexplate i need or a different transmission, those are the economical options. I would like to use the one the Mustang II one if I can, due to the higher stall tq converter and the extra room for routing the exhaust.

Yeah, if you could find a flex plate for $40-100, that would certainly be cheaper than a bell housing and torque converter. |
Yeah, i have never seen a GM unit with a separate bell housing.
The car won't see the street until summer at the earliest, looks like I will just have to wait out the lead time. Summit is showing it will ship late december now, so already much sooner than the first lead times indicated. |
Looking at car-part.com. Some sources show new, but they may have them mis-catagorized. Try Allied Auto Parts, Ltd. Can-MB(Winnipeg) 1-888-233-3332

A transmission rebuilding specialty firm? Meaning, they may have sources you are unaware of...

Even a speciality machine shop. Ie drive line machine shop.
There's a guy in Phoenix that i use that can grind custom spline counts on axle shafts, retube axles, and literally the sky is the limit. |
