RIP Colin Powell

Inspite of his recent political views I always liked him. RIP Mr. Secretary.

"Built into each of us is a little calculator that can make judgments that will never appear on a piece of paper. And sometimes you know something's right, you can't prove it to anybody, or you know something's wrong. Little ethical circuit breakers you carry around inside...so I go with my instinct." Colin Powell

When he left the military, I also thought for sure he would.

Such a solid man, wish it could've been a bit different.

I would have loved to see that.

Met him a couple of thies when he commanded V Corps in Germany. A gentleman soldier...RIP Sir!

I never met him, but I once sat next to a distinguished older gentleman on a flight from MSP to ATL who turned out to be a retired four star Army general. He had been the Army's chief supply officer. I asked him about Colin Powell and he was very complimentary. He said that Powell was so capable that he embarrassed the powers that be when he became Chair of the Joint Staff. After that, "They" decided never to allow someone as capable as Powell to be CJS ever again. He said Powell was the kind of person who you just wanted to be around. He had such charisma that when he entered the room you wanted to go over and stand by him.

My understanding is that Powell was encouraged to run by presidents of both parties but he turned them down because of his wife. I don't recall if she had mental health issues or what the problem was, but he didn't think she could handle it if he became president.

"Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off."

And my personal favorite.

"You are not only responsible for what you say, you are also responsible for what others hear."

RIP to a man of integrity, especially towards the end of his life.

I had the great chance of meeting him and listen to him speak at a conference. Nice guy and a helluva motivational speaker.

Right before his speech they handed out American flags to the audience. This was when they wanted him to run for Prez. They were pushing him hard, I was surprised when he didn't throw his hat in the ring.

RIP Sir and thank you for your service.

Maybe he felt like he had already given enough, and he gave a lot.

My father turned down a few jobs because he did not want to put his family through it. He declined a number of judicial appointments and political positions.

That second quote is one for our times for sure. A sage man who served well, RIP.
