Big old boat, just like the old days

This one is full of salt for our roads, just incase we thought we could get away
with no rust next spring. Really hard on cars and trucks when you see how much salt they dump on our roads.

I don't think they call it a boat when they are that big.
I hate road salt.

We lived in northern Japan in the late 70s and again in the mid 80s. We got a lot of snow. I don't think they put salt or sand down on the roads. I remember my dad installing and removing chains at times. I seem to remember us having studs when we were there in the 70s, but I don't think we had them when we went back in the 80s. THere were, of course, always snow/winter tires installed for the winter. THere were times that we would go months without being able to actually see the road surface because of the snow/ice/slush.

We live about 30 miles from the largest salt mine in the US. So transportation of salt is not too expensive for the road crews around here. Every time a few flakes start to fall, out come the salt trucks. Now with the lake effect snow we get, that is just about everyday! So there are very few cars around here that are over 15 years old that are driven year round.

It's time for me to get under the Taco and refresh the Fluid Film treatment I did last year. Freakin' salt.

How big does a boat have to get to become a ship?

(Yeah, I know..submarines are boats)

Why doesn’t salt rust away the ship?

It does. They have to clean, clean, clean after every cargo of whatever, just to keep ahead.

Ships don't last too long.

The size of the ships on the Great Lakes are limited by the internal size of the locks that they need to fit into. I believe it is about 1010' long, and 90' wide.

Do we assume they just wash it into the lake? Sad really. Salt runoff into our lakes is becoming a bigger problem than rust cars here.

So does this mean that you haven't retired yet? I thought you were talking about that a year or two ago?

No, not allowed to wash anything out. The stevedores (us) are responsible for sweeping holds CLEAN, usually. Sometimes crew does it, mostly us. It's usually seller of the cargo loads it on board, ship carries it, receiver gets it out of the ships holds.

And yes I'm retired
