Cleaning a throttle body

I bought throttle body cleaner for 01 Miata. Do I need to remove TB or just spray, wipe, repeat? Or something else entirely.
Miata rpm’s drop to 200 rpm’s when stopping. Either spuddering out or bouncing back to 1000 rpm’s after 5 seconds or so.
I fixed the starting problem, now it does this two days later.
Thanks.

You should remove the intake boot ( if not mass air equipped) and spray with engine idling

I like to prop the throttle plate open, and wipe it all down, especially the edges of the throttle plate . Careful with your fingers . Key off !

Yep

Clean the back side of the plate with extreme prejudice.

I would not be afraid to remove it but I don't know what the TB gasket material is. Meaning can you just slap it back together?

Semi off topic. I did that on a throttle by wire GM sedan. It took three days for the car to relearn an acceptable idle.

I always take it off to clean it, never thought about cleaning it at idle...

My buddy does a thorough hose down of the TB while revving the motor. Changes the oil and filter after. Smokes like heck when he does it, but he has gotten more than one car to pass smog with that trick.

For my Xterra, if you clean the throttle body you have to go through a throttle sensor recalibration process. Something to keep in mind, if you don't do it, the truck idles way too high. Not sure if this applies to your vehicle though.

Same with my 'Z. Actually, 3 processes for recal.

On the Xterra its pretty wild. I had to do it with a stop watch to make sure I was getting the operation done in under the time limit.

1 Start engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.
2 Turn ignition switch OFF and wait at least 10 seconds.
3 Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch ON and wait 3 seconds.
4 Repeat the following procedure quickly five times within 5 seconds.
A Fully depress the accelerator pedal.
5 Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 20 seconds until the MIL stops blinking and turned ON.
6 Fully release the accelerator pedal within 3 seconds after the MIL turned ON.
7 Start engine and let it idle.
8 Wait 20 seconds.
9 Rev up the engine two or three times and make sure that idle speed and ignition timing are within the specifications.

Looks to be about the exact same process. Must be a Nissan thing. Hate when I'm doing it and my kids or wife want to chat as I'm trying to keep time and read the instructions...lol.

There's a couple other "you might also have to do..." processes that I don't remember as clearly.
