On the off chance, anyone know about truffle hunting?

I have a very athletic dog with an exceptional nose. I live in Western Oregon. Sounds like a fun hobby. A quick search confirms that I live in a good place for truffles.

Anyone do this? If so, where/ how to start?

No answer but I have a mini labradoodle that I yell at about 50 times a day for eating mushrooms! He’s addicted to them.

I don't but my son is learning about it. He moved to Tacoma in June and for the last 2 weeks has been sending my photos of the mushrooms he is forging. He is fascinated by this, he has bought books to learn more. Some of the varieties can cost over $50/lb at the store. Seasonal, spring and fall, this is a short window for gathering.

I don't...but I heard it's done best in the middle of the night, without a dog.
You take a gunny sack and head out as far as you dare and wait.......:D

One good pig should do the job. Sounds like a good business plan. Pair truffle hunting with wine tasting to follow.:)

Learned to hunt edibles with my ex-FIL (great guy). He learned back in Indiana from friends and family. Look for a group like this https://www.lamushrooms.org/index.html in your area. They are very helpful and many very interesting people are members.

The key to proper truffle hunting is to use the right caliber ammo!
(We now have two smart-azzes)

Exactly, you want a clean hit. Don’t want to risk just wounding the poor truffle.

LWJ 10-27-2021 09:35 AM

Damn. What have I started.

A smart azz parade.

Fitting.

vash 10-27-2021 09:36 AM

No one was trying to cause a kerfuffle. :)

Tobra 10-27-2021 09:46 AM

I know that even a blind pig can find a truffle

Starless 10-27-2021 09:52 AM

This is all I have to offer....https://www.natruffling.org/guide.htm

All I know is that ruffles have ridges.
So..a shotgun with buckshot might work best.
