Winches

Light duty stuff, electric or battery powered.

Any real world experiences?

I am getting to the point where my Mongo days are over when it comes to moving stuff around the house and farm. My wife also wants to be able to load stuff in her trailer.

I am looking at this but the customer reviews are a bit scary: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0043OV0IA#customerReviews

Also looking at this type of battery powered winch: https://www.amazon.com/SuperHandy-Electric-Portable-Polyethylene-Brushless/dp/B088MP8T8N/ref=pd_pb_ss_no_hpb_2/134-1641296-7562763?pd_rd_w=LjvRA&pf_rd_p=45f92aae-3fbe-4e26-9929-951264041217&pf_rd_r=XYK8EVNGB6633S750T4N&pd_rd_r=20f9b2c5-6556-4522-bcd0-6b22b6563d30&pd_rd_wg=wIjlo&pd_rd_i=B088MP8T8N&psc=1#customerReviews

I know the limitations of these but the portable nature of them is what I am after. I have other winches and come-along(s) for the heavier stuff.

Thanks!

Harbor freight makes some very good lighter duty winches that are battery powered. If going with a hand held, I like the Warn because it utilizes synthetic rope. Only 750lb capacity though.

That's too bad about those Warn portable winches. They look like the could be the business, but it's apparently hit and miss on the QC.

Warn has definitely gone downhill unless you go with uber expensive Zeon series. I stayed away from them on my Jeep.

I will go check out.

The 750lb rating is more than enough for my needs for a portable.

I was looking at lift gates for my Tundra and decided to pass...cost and looks!

Again, my monkey-f'ing around with certain loads and cargo are coming to an end. I need more kids!

the Harbor Freight ones are good. I have a 9600 LBS Smittybuilt on my jeep and like it but would probably go with a badlands when it needs to be replaced. Matts off road recovery use the Harbor Freight winches for some pretty heavy pulling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TRl4edM_74

My nephew built a boom that goes in his Reese receiver. He had an electric winch attached to it so he can lift a deer into his truck if he's hunting alone. Plugs the winch into his trailer connector and uses the center hot pin to power the winch. Pretty easy on and off setup.

Great idea. If a guy is fabrication illiterate like myself HF sells a receiver winch plate to mount. I'm thinking I'm going to get one but that boom idea sounds especially good for deer and elk hunting.

If it was just for that stuff, I'd be all in. I have a winch on the front of my 6x6 ranger for and my wife will be using the portable as well.

The weirdest design of our house is that there is an attic above the garage...the only way up was by ladder until we put in pull down stairs...at least 12 feet from floor to ceiling.

There is a ton of stuff up there that Mongo used manual pulleys to get up. Mongo no want to do in reverse.

We are downsizing for the move and getting stuff down and out.

Even large logs I need to cut and split...a second inch for stability will be great. A back is a terrible thing to waste.

Closest HF is about 45 minutes North. I'll head up next week.

Thanks!

Well, I guess that takes the backhoe and front end loader out of the equation!

Front end loaders I have two of...I’ll know about the backhoe within two years.

We are just making “adjustments” now so it is not a Tsunami of change once we settled on a path.

In my last house, I had a Dayton hoist to move motorcycles from one of my garages up into a workshop above, through a removable section of the floor. It had a 500 pound capacity, only about a 10 foot travel distance because of the short length of the wire rope (it had a single pulley) and I don’t think it was made in the USA. It got the job done, but it was expensive at $1300 and I had some issues with the wire rope wrapping itself between the backside of the drum and the housing a couple times.

I did get quite a bit of use out of it, but I had a little more elaborate system than the one you’re probably contemplating. If you just have a fixed point above to hang it from, it limits what you can do with it.

I’m not sure something that cost $200 or $300 would be worth buying.

If it’s just for a once in a blue moon kind of a thing, a chain fall might be the answer. They are dead nuts reliable and not all that much work. A little slow, yes, but…

A rolling gantry with electric winch would be nice.

That’s essentially what I had. I repurposed some parts out of an angiography suite that I took out and built a gantry to hang the winch from, which allowed me to haul stuff up and then move it.

I have a small 12v winch that is just strong enough to pull my 911 onto a trailer. The biggest problem when using it is what you have available to mount it to.
