A question for the oldsters
I'm 63 and in great shape, and I want to stay that way for many more years. I hike, backpack, and climb a lot, but I get aches and pains in my back and joints and slight muscle pain. They are minor and just an annoyance - for now. It's only gonna get worse as I age.
I hear adds on the radio for supplements that reduce or eliminate the aches and pains and keep you feeling younger, longer. For example, Balance of Nature. Are these for real? I can't trust the random internet sites, so I'm asking here. Any older Pelicans have experience with this, good, bad, or indifferent?

I'll be 70 next year and I take no medication pills at all.
I do take and swear by GNC Men's daily vitamins. More costly than a grocery store vitamin....but they really do work. The recommended dose is 2 a day. I only take one....I can't sleep more than four hours if I take two. They give me a high energy level...and when colds or flu come around, I never get them. I highly recommend them.

That radio ad stuff is for the birds. Don't bother.
Diet (and exercise) is everything. Eat healthy and you give your body a head start. Eat the great American diet at your own peril and with the associated health risks. There's plenty of info on a healthy diet. Sounds like mild arthritis to me. I've had some success with real CBD, not the snake oil you can find on AMZN. I take 20:1 CBD:THC, the kind you can only get at dispensaries in certain states. The extremely low level of THC makes it impossible to get high. I have no interest in that. These pills and drops have provided me temporary relief of headaches, aches and pains, back aches etc. I use them on occasion. If you go this route, make sure you get the real thing, not the crap you can find anywhere.

I've had mild arthritis all my life but I have some stuff called Lyprinol (available in the US) and it makes it fairly much go away. It works well for mild inflamation. I've had it every day for 30 years.

I am 64 and still work/play at a decent pace . Other than prescription meds for cholesterol and blood pressure I just take daily multi vitamin and baby aspirin . Yes after working a solid day outside swinging a pick or shovel I am sore as hell . Just part of the territory.

I do two things, direct application to the source of discomfort: I have had a lot of injuries in my life (I will be getting my second hip replacement in August) and that helps. Second, I rub the CBD on my wrist twice a day and then wear a wrist band. Works for me, may not work for you. As I have written here before, if CBD:THC is a placebo, perfect. BTW, CBD:THC does not, at least for me, work for certain level of pain. I have a very high threshold and that is why the second hip gets fixed in August. Pain is a metric you need to pay attention to.

I give my dad a CBD roll-on. He absolutely swears by them. He has them sprinkled around the house, in the car, in the bathroom now.

When I see the stuff pitched on TV tell me "70% of our customers go on to order more!" I can only think that the other 30% actually spent a considerable amount of time and frustration getting the auto-draft payment for automatic reorders removed from their credit card.

Like you, Charlie, I'm 63, active, and trying to ward off the aging process. I take one medication for my prostate but no supplements. I never take any pain medication unless I've had a surgery.
Stretch every day, many times a day. First thing I do each morning is put on my sox and undies from a standing position rather than sitting on the edge of the bed. 3 times a day morning, noon and night, Plank, a few pushups, stretch...It makes a huge difference and it feels nice. I really notice the planking while I'm climbing on my bicycle. If I don't do it for a few days, I miss the core strength to skedaddle up the hills in the manner that I'ver become accustomed. I'm currently working on my 'asian squat', doing what I need to do to make that happen. I'm especially stiff in my ankles, and I've had one hip replacement and am trying to avoid the second round, and loosening the muscles and tendons required to get low and get back up again really helps to move easily for long periods on my feet, such as on long hikes. I will say this, cycling leaves less residual soreness by a vast margin than does hiking, at least for me.

My best advice for you Charlie is don't get hurt. Even at 63 we don't heal as well as one would hope. Eat well stay active and don't be a dope.

manage your weight, blood chemistry and get more exercise than you think you need......
It will not get better than that....... pain is what reminds you that you are still alive and VERY mortal.

Keep physically busy and get yourself a hot tub, it works for me. I hop in it in the morning with a hot cup of coffee and then back in after a busy day with a cold beer. I keep it hot at 104°. Five to ten minutes and I'm born again.

^^^ Will 84 degrees work? The turtle pond is big enough and it was 84 in it today.

I will be 80 in a few weeks. I haven't had any problems requiring replacements or surgery, except for two hernia surgeries almost 30 years ago. I do have age related mildly high blood pressure, cholesterol, chronic kidney disease (stabilized for years), eye pressure treated with drops, etc. All things irritating but not disabling. I have tried to always subscribe to the "everything in moderation" most of my life in the way of exercise, eating, etc.. I do take a multiple vitamin mostly for the trace minerals. I actually don't think it's that important, & I can't offer any specific advice on pain, arthritis, etc. I've always done a lot of exercise without doing it on an "exercise program" basis. My wife & I went on a five+ mile hike day before yesterday, I laid rebar & mixed & put down 18 bags of cement (premixed) yesterday fixing a small retreat area in the back. Like others have said, I think there is a big benefit to keeping moving, whether it's in an organized way or just making sure you are active on a daily basis. I think that's the reason (along with some luck) I haven't suffered from aches & pains from joints & muscles, & whatever else. Too many people become sedentary as they get older, & that's one big thing I think needs to be avoided.
Edit: By the way, who are you implying are oldsters around here ???

You'll figure out what works for you...meanwhile, listen to the legit health care pros when it comes to supplements...according to advice from them, some help, some are snake oil.
