Pet insurance?
Did you buy pet insurance for your dog or cat? We just bought a pup and wifey thinks we should have medical insurance for Phoebe, our GSD/Labradoodle. We never purchased insurance for our previous pets but that was over 20 years ago. Seems everyone pet owner we meet nowadays has it. What about you?

Nope. I told my mutt a grand was my limit. She understands the consequences.
I did just spent 900 on some dentistry, tag removal, updated shots, and a biopsy on one of the nasty looking tags. I told her she was pushing the limit. Last edited by Sooner or later; 11-03-2021 at 03:53 PM.. |

I wish I had with my pet cat.
An SPCA boy, got the cat for free but cost me over $4,000 in the first year. Eye operations and knee op'. |

Ridiculous, health insurance for a pet? absurd. Must be an only in California thing because I have it. Our dog is my wife's baby so I have no say in the matter

I checked into it long time ago. Makes little sense if you have a savings account for emergencies. I found there were deductibles and limits to the plans available. And like with all insurance, they will be happy to collect every month but you have to chase after them to get paid. Generally dogs are healthy early in life and if they get a bad illness when they are older, IMHO you have to say good bye not just for financial reasons but also in fairness to the dog.
I also see people that want only the "best" for their pet, which often translates to high vet bills. Most vets will upsell all day long if you are ready for it. In my area people sometimes boast with their vet bills, like Ferrari guys do with their maintenance bills. ![]() G |

First. I sell insurance. So I have a perspective on this.
Second. Notice how the prices really don’t increase? That’s because someone is making bank on this. Just like dental and vision insurance. All are nothing more than negative interest savings accounts. |

Our quote was for $65 per month and Cheyenne didn’t get knee surgery until she was 9. It was $6k so no wasn’t worth it. She lived to 11 without any other issues

I'd insure that cutie pup for at least 50K
![]() Seriously though.... I don't need insurance to cover items except for catastrophic events. I told my pup that 5K was my absolute limit .... she told me I wuz FO$ .... I think she was spot on... I have brown eyes .... but hers are green ![]() Luv my Lab... she's priceless... What a cute pup! |

Yes, petplan. Our recently departed black lab, Ruby, needed two torn ACL surgeries when she was less than 2. Petplan covered it, and we ended up ahead with the policy.
She ended up with a variety of allergies and other minor health issues, we were visiting the vet on average every 3-4 months, and we’re reimbursed for most visits. Our 5 year old lab is similarly insured but hasn’t needed it. She doesn’t have the allergies and her knees are doing ok. So, petplan is ahead with us, but not by much. Your mileage will vary.

Lifetime dog owner here and never had pet insurance . In my opinion you are better off investing monthly in a savings account letting it build up to cover vet bills. Generally speaking you will sock away $$$ while the pet is younger and then chip away as pet gets older .
Put away 100.00 a month that's 1200.00 a year . If you have the discipline to do that EVERY month you should be set for most future issues . And if your pet stays healthy until the end you have savings for yourself . A win/win in my opinion .

^^^^ This. It's not just pets either... applies to virtually everything that one can "self insure" and cover the expense of the unknown. I just do what I'm very comfortable doing with lots of stuff.... YMMV.
A pet's medical bills are just part of the deal .... Woof ![]() |

We looked into it. Unfortunately never got it. Was too much "fine print" on what was actually covered.
Between my Sydney with his cancer, Belle with her two TPL surgeries and Toby with his kidneys, probably close to $35,000 or higher in vet bills in the past 10 yrs.(not counting the normal vet stuff...) Some of which insurance may or may not have covered. .

Yep ^
And you know that the choices that an insurance co would make would not be the same that you would make.
