What kind of duckling is this?

I have a lot of ducks at my house, and whenever they have ducklings, they are the typical mallard brown and yellow. This clutch is a little different as there are 2 solid black ducklings. Mama duck's siblings look like mallards, or a Hawaiian duck hybrid. Mama, otoh, looks like a mallard, but with much lighter coloring.

Looks like you've got some jungle fever goin' on there. Or maybe she's just ducklingsitting.

Yeah, that reminds me I need to buy an air rifle.

I think mother duck has been putting it about a bit. More than one dad.

Here's 3 of the outliers. 2 black, and a light colored one.

Some duck species practice what is called "egg dumping" where they sneak eggs into other ducks nests. While gathering a sufficient clutch of eggs to start the incubation period the nests are left unattended while the hen forages for food to produce more eggs. Another hen can leave her eggs at that time. Once the primary hen starts sitting on the nest, the eggs all mature at the same rate and hatch together. All the ducklings bond to whoever hatched them. Perhaps the dark ducklings are from another type of duck.

where's Hugh when you need him. He'd turn that dirty tree dwelling POS into a belt and save a dozen ducklings in the process.
