Moving to NYC.

Got an offer I cannot refuse, moving to NYC in January. Do not want to live in an outer borough or NJ, looking to live somewhere in mid town. Office is very close to Grand Central Station.

I may do a month to month fully furnished at first, not sure on that. Looking for a one bedroom with enough room for a pull out couch in the living room.

Do not plan to take a car (we are keeping our current home in OH for now...long story).

Any advice on finding an apartment? Things to avoid? Anything unique about signing a lease in NY/NYC?

Any input appreciated.

NYC is a nightmare to start out in. my daughter has been looking for similar apt.. village or chelsea area , for last 3 months now. You need a broker as these apts go immediately. the ones that acutially do get online before being taken usually have 20 people lined up to see. you need to be able to make a commitment site unseen. fees and up front commitmemts are outrageous. 2mos rent to broker, 2 mos security dep, then first 2 mos rent up front. cost is 12-15 k just to get into the thing. if you are first time renter or young, parent or guradian must fill out huge paperwork, show income, and have 1 year of rent in bank acct. to show, then gurantee the rent.

Mid town can be brutal or a joy depending on your PoV. I'm sure you've scoped out the rents already. Not bringing the car tells me you know what you're in for. This is not Ohio.

Keep us posted for a meet n greet.

Nothing is worth that. How does the place exist? Old customers of mine (not old people) moved to Manhattan because he was on track to become a wig at a big brokerage. They spent 8 years there, private schools, remodeled, I assume a condo in a BIG building, and finally got the 'promotion' to come back to CA (Long Beach) where the kids can go to public school. They kept their house here renting it out for good money while gone. Good thing because the house is now over 2 mil in value.

The only downside is that (before COVID anyway) he had to commute to downtown L.A. He's an analyst, not a broker per se, but I'm sure he was able to hit the office at 5:30 am like the market boys do. If they are lucky, they can try and beat the traffic home, otherwise about an hour to 1:15 to go 30 miles.

He rode the subway in NYC. Just a huge difference in lifestyle.

There was one more thing he told me: when I did work for them they felt things went pretty well. In NYC the contractors were a nightmare according to him. He wished I was there. Well, that wasn't gonna happen. I've worked in San Francisco and that was enough! Years ago so I have no idea how people get things done when there is no parking and no space to even drop off lumber.

As far back as that was, I was told that if I got a dumpster in SF to fill it in one day or it will be full by the time I got back to the job the next day. True.

What fun!

Remember the trains are so good you can get from Brooklyn to Grand Central Station in five minutes. It keeps your options open.

Why are you set on Midtown besides commute? Frankly, Midtown does not have a whole lot to offer from a lifestyle perspective. Do you have kids? My career is in NYC Multifamily real estate. I’d be happy to talk if you want to shoot me a PM.

All the money in the world? I'm sure the super rich get along fine in NYC. You could live on a yacht in the harbor, stay semi permanently in a 5 star hotel. All the money in the world means limitless options.

Yeah, for all the money in the world I'm on a plane tonight — a private charter. First thing in the morning would be a dozen $3000 suits with all the siht, and a $200 haircut.

Get back Jojo.

Seattle > Ohio > NYC, you are moving east!

Man, more power to you. There is no way I could do that, I need open spaces. Sounds like an exciting move and I wish you luck. I am interested in hearing how it all works out for you. The first thing that popped into my head was all the Seinfeld episodes about apartments that cracked me up.

First thing that popped into my mind was Seinfeld's non descript garage full of Porsches. I'd just live there.

Extremely envious! I would love to move back to NYC some day. Lived in the fur district, W29th (as quiet as living in the country at night) and upper west side on 86th, lot of energy. Miss it terribly.

good luck!

Yeah that was my thought, Midtown? Why Midtown?

You really want to deal with M-F work commute and tourist central on the weekends?

It's a great time to move to NYC. It's on the upswing after getting pretty devastated by Covid in 2020 and it's the greatest city in the world. I'm in Minneapolis at the moment and was on the phone with one of my best friends from here this morning who was in NY looking at apartments as we spoke. He has two daughters in school in Manhattan and already got an apartment for them last year, now he and his wife are considering getting a studio apartment for a year just to enjoy the city and be near the daughters.

They are not rich but he's a hustler and has never hurt for money in his life...everyone in NY has hustle. People with no hustle never understand NYC and usually fear and/or hate it. I was just there a couple of weeks ago, staying in midtown with one of my other close friends and his 93 year old mom in the apartment they have had since before he was born. He turned 70 last week. Midtown was amazing to be in, (54th and 1st Ave.), I had never stayed in that part of town before. My stepmother lived in the West Village for years and we used to stay with her when we were young.

Everyone I know in New York is doing fantastic...better than good.

Were it me I'd start to repent. I'd try to make amends for all the evil and deplorable things I must have done to cause me to move to Mid-Town NYC.

I've been there for work, but decline the chance to go lately. Just being a "home body" and content to stick around town.

I love the vibrancy and yeah, everybody's got a side hustle. I have good friends there but would rather they visit here in SoCal.

But the pizza is SO worth it. That's all I got.
