Any one familiar with NB Miatas. Need help badly.
My sons Miata was having starting issues. It would be intermittent starting problems. Well one day it just wouldn’t start. Unlike my other cars, I just threw parts at it hoping I would get lucky. New MAF, spark plugs, coils packs, wires, PCV valve, cam sensor, fuel filter, fuel pump. Didn’t fix problem. Anyhow, I start cleaning wires. Eventually I clean the engine ground and it has been starting great ever since. Now, when I come to a stop after warning up a bit, the rpm’s will often drop to 200 when I come to a stop. If I am in gear at 3k or more and put foot on clutch to stop, this problem seems to occur. If I am at a lower rpm, not so much. If I drop into neutral it is usually fine but will act up sometimes. At 200 rpm’s it either dies after sputtering there for a few seconds or putts back up to 1,000. There are no codes. I drove to work this morning (20 mins) and it seemed to be fine when fully warm . It actually was idling at 800 rpm’s. Could just be luck. Also, it drives great when going. Never dies when driving. Any suggestions? I am out of ideas. I tried spraying starting fluid when cool and running, no change in revs.
Thanks. |
Throttle body.

I cleaned it.
I’ve been on the Miata board which not much luck btw. |
If you suspect a grounding issue run a battery ground cable straight from the MAF.
It's actually a common pretty much "free" upgrade. I ran an extra ground from MAF on my Mazda 3 and the car did run noticeably smoother and pretty much eliminated the fly by wire throttle lag. EDIT: quick search, 1st hit. https://maxima.org/forums/4th-generation-maxima-1995-1999/376649-finally-fixed-stalling-issue-grounding-maf-sensor.html |
I added a beefy ground strap from the head to the body on my NA and fixed a lot of little niggling issues. My original ground strap was in good repair, too, but clearly something wasn't right.

With all those parts replaced you might have put on an inferior part, if this was not an issue before. Measure tice, cut once.

Wasn’t by best move. I need to figure out how to test parts. Thanks All!

I can swap each part back except for MAF. Guess I can do one at a time and see what happens.
