New york, where to stay

We were planning on doing a small trip, well spending a week in New York. The time range will be approximately one week in March.

I have no idea where to stay in NY, the city I am from has 50000 people in wide area and new york has millions. Help me out where to stay? Nothing too expensive, but in decent range to see the good sights.

Thanks

My daughter lives across from the NY Stock Exchange, we stay at the Hilton Garden Inn at 6 Water Street. small rooms but easy access to the subway and walks to Freedom Tower, Occulus, water front, etc. Join Hilton if you aren't a member.

Stay in Brooklyn some really nice hotels in Williamsburg. Take the L train into the city and enjoy!

Williamsburg and Greenpoint are trendy and have really good places to eat.

depends on what you think are "good sites" and what you think is "expensive". My idea of good sites is getting to McSorleys promptly at 11am and sitting there until about 2pm and then wandering down to Katz' deli for a pastrami sandwich.

As I would tell anyone that used to visit me when I lived there, pretty much anywhere in Manhattan is fine to stay since you can get anywhere by cab or subway. Dont stay in queens, brooklyn, bronx, harlem or new jersey and youll be happy - nothing wrong with those places but if your coming all the way from Europe, you might as well stay in Manhattan (in my opinion).

if it is important for you to be able to walk out of the hotel and be in the middle of it all, then stay in the middle of it all...depending on what that means to you. For some, it means Times Square, for others it means in the Village, etc.

A quick look at current prices tells me your looking at over $300 per night most anywhere in Manhattan - however, in march it may be a bit cheaper since Thanksgiving (now) is a very popular time to visit

If you are staying a week it may not be a bad idea to stay in more than one hotel. Three days in one location, three or four in another. A lot will depend on what you intend to do?

In lower Manhattan we like Club Quarters Hotel, New York City, World Trade Center. It over looks the WT memorial. Walking distance to most things in Lower Mnahattan.

Mid town we stayed in a place that was a converted Paper Mill as I recall. A bit trendy and a little on the cold side, lots of concrete. It was interesting in that it was on the East side of the East River overlooking the Koch Bridge and Manhattan. It had a neat retsaurant on the roof that had a nice view at night. Ravel Hotel, Trademark Collection by Wyndham.

Lincoln Square area- lower West side of Central Park. We stayed in the Empire as it was famous from a TV Series my daughter liked so we stayed there for her. More pricey then the other two but not bad and close to Central Park, The Plaza, Wollman Rink, etc.

These are just a few I can think of off the top of my head. There are a lot of great boutique hotels in NYC (or were, not sure since 2020?) Look for deals. Prior to Covid and the BLM crap we would go to NYC six or seven times per year long weekends or a week at at time. Give me an idea what you want to do and I can have my wife look up some things.

Staying in Brooklyn or Hoboken you get to look at the city

The view from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade on a clear night is spectacular.

Yes, many new boutique hotels....

Also you could AirBnb, or vacation rentals to go

A long time ago (35 yrs?) we took a trip to NYC for a friend's wedding on Long Island. Spent a long weekend there. Stayed at the Algonquin Hotel, right off Times Square. Saw all the sights on a tour guided by our friends. Express subway train uptown to the MET is a ride not to be missed. Here in Southern California we'd call it an 'E' ticket ride. Went to a Broadway play (Dream Girls) and saw the UN. Even went to the top of the World Trade Center which was still standing back then. I think I got a glimpse of my home state of New Jersey while up there.
I have no idea what it would be like to visit/stay there today. I only wish I'd had a digital camera back then to record the trip.
Have fun!

Ive stayed in the Pennsylvania Hotel across of MSG a bunch of times. Last time was Thanksgiving in 1987 or 88. Went down for a smoke and it was me and James and Jason from Metallica on the elevator. I was a kid so this was pretty exciting. James' had a cast on from his skateboarding accident. Anyway, its nothing fancy but its probably a good location if your coming as a tourist as Penn Station is right there and your basically in times square

It has gone way down hill. Rats in my room (I kid you not...not mice, there is a difference), frayed sheets and towels.

I left after one night and the guys I was working with told me to let them handle the hotels.

I've stayed in Jersey a couple diff times and taken the bus across. (I think it only took 15 minutes)
The hotels in Jersey are about a quarter of the price of Manhattan.

My daughter is studying there so we’ve stayed all over that city. Financial area I like the Marriott by the World Trade Center or the residence inn on Broadway. In midtown I like the residence inn on 6th and 38 and the spring hill suites on 37th. By time sq the Marriott marquis on 45th. I’m a Marriott platinum member.

Another good location is the Washington Square Hotel. Right on the northwest corner of Washington Square Park..in the Village.....this is in the middle of it all - to me. When I lived in soho, i put my parents in this hotel when they visited because i could walk up to it. turned out to be a really good spot for a hotel. ...and you can walk over to the waverly diner for breakfast...its just down the block...and down a bit to John's pizza on bleeker

I visited Manhattan 3 years ago and stayed in Chelsea.

I stayed in this Four Points Sheraton, the room was clean and well appointed, no rodents or bugs. *edit* When we were there all we did was sleep in the room and to be honest there was very little of that as well, we were on the run for a 3 day weekend visiting family and seeing sites, we did not need a 5 star hotel just a nice clean one with beds to sleep on. I checked my fit app after that weekend and we walked 30 miles that weekend. LOL!!

If we walked 10 minutes west on 25th (actually we dropped down to 23rd street to avoid walking between the tenements on 25th) you hit the high line which is an old unused elevated train track that is now a park that you can walk the west side on.

If you walked 5 minutes east on 25th (safe to do) you would be at Madison Square Park where the Flat Iron building is.

If you walked towards the Google Campus to the west there is an old Nabisco Cookie factory that has been turned into a cool indoor mall with lots of restaurants and shops. We had some fantastic made to order Ramen there. I also found some local beers on draft, we sat in the common area and people watched while we ate and drank.

I liked the spot, we could walk out to everything we wanted, and a couple of different subways were nearby so we could jump on and go wherever you wanted in the city.

We were all over it from the Museum of Natural History to the Guggenheim down to the financial district, into China town and Little Italy, we walked the Brooklyn Bridge at midnight one night.

I grew up just outside the city on Long Island during a time when the city was very dangerous.

I tell you that to tell you this, in 2019 when I was there, I could feel it was different than it was in the early 2000's. It seemed to be declining quickly,

I am sure the news sensationalizes things, if I were to return (no plans to) I would be more on my toes and be more diligent and observant of my surroundings.

Try not to be the only one around and if you are get somewhere quick where there are lots of people.

Hence my changing my route walking to the high line. I noticed it was a rent control area and it seemed a little rowdy there. That was in the evening when it was still light out, I made a point to change my route 2 blocks over where I knew it was more commercial with lots of shops / restaurants / bars / people and walk there.

If you there for a week you will cover the city nicely.

My Aunt lives on the edge of China Town right at the entrance to the US District Court .

My wifes niece lives out in Riverhead, she drove in Saturday evening and went to dinner with my family in Little Italy. After dinner all the older folks (my Aunts and Uncles) we done for the night, we stayed out and wandered around with our niece all night.

Ended up in a Sushi bar somewhere near the Fulton Fish Market (IIRC) we were all over the place.

Then we decided to walk out to the middle of the bridge and take some pics at 11:30 at night. We ended up parting ways at 1:30 in the morning, we jumped n the subway, and took it back to Chelsea.

We made a cardinal mistake getting on the subway, which was really crowded even at 0130. We saw an empty car along with about a dozen locals and all bee lined for it, the moment we walked in we all realized our fatal mistake, and it was too late. The doors were closing.

We were in the last car and the car in front of us was packed full, we quickly realized why.

Someone had performed a PPP trifecta in the middle of the last car, piss poo puke... and I have to say a very impressive amount.

The smell.... I can still smell it today 3 years later.

Shirts over faces.. we all looked at each other, us and the other folks who made the same mistake.. we all started laughing our asses off.

The moment I saw it was empty I should have known, my NY skills are not as sharp as they used to be. I forgot all the subway routes as well.

We just went to NYC last weekend. We wanted to be in the middle of it all so we stayed at the Refinery at 38th and 6th. The hotel was clean and good staff. We paid a little more for a slightly larger room with a view for about $500/night will all the taxes.

It's so easy to get around by subway or Uber that staying in Brooklyn wouldn't be an issue either.

Our view:
