.40 S&W vs 9 MM Thinking about switching my CC and home protection fleet of Glock .40's to Glock 9 MM's, any thoughts? |

Still, cheaper than a new spoon. |

FYI- it is not a standard glock 9mm barrel it is a conversion barrel, it's the same size as the 40 so it fit properly but milled at 9mm. FWIW AimSurplus usually has Glock 9mm barrels for $50 or so. That said, other than "new spoon" is there a real reason to switch from 40 to 9? 3 years ago, maybe for ammo cost savings, but from what I can see 40 and 9 are about the same cost per round now.... |

The only other thing that I can think of other than price and availability is comfort. |

Depends on how many of each gun you already have. I decided to consolidate calibers and got out of .40. I sold those guns off. My main calibers are 9mm and .45ACP. I have lots of guns for each, but one in .357SIG I just can't part with. The .44 mag is only for when foreign visitors want to shoot. |

The OP didn't say the reason for the switch . I get it if someone wants to consolidate calibers . But for self protection doesn't the 40 offer more knock down power than the 9 ? . |

There is simply not enough "real world" difference between these two to warrant the trouble and expense involved in making this switch. Oh, many, many shooters have wiled away the hours "bench racing", or "arm chair quarterbacking" the theoretical differences. On paper, yes, they do exist. In the real world, there is little to choose between the two - both are completely inadequate... ;) |

Caliber choice is like brand of motor oil. Everyone has an opinion and are very passionate that they have what is best. Some folks go to 9mm for reasons like arthritis. Some prefer the lower recoil for quicker shooting or comfort. When ammo all but disappeared last year, the only thing around for a while was 9 and .22lr. 40 is fading away. I'd rather have 10mm or 45 acp if knockdown power is the goal but I'm not needing to have a shootout with a perp in a kevlar vest. With advancements in ammo technology, I'm happy with JHP 9mm +P. |

Ultimately you use what you are comfortable and accurate with . With online ammo purchasing so easy ( for most ) getting it is less of an issue . At least that has been the case for me and what I use . There is no perfect one size fits all caliber . |

I shoot a lot and prefer the 9mm recoils, etc. For home, I still use the Ruger Vaquero in .45 LC. I shoot about 25 rounds with it a year just to stay in relative comfort with it. Quote:

I agree online make life simpler IF the laws don't change. Unfortunately for some, last year there was tons of ammo in all calibers all marked "OUT OF STOCK". For those who hadn't learned from history, they were in trouble. I guess this is a good time to remember the old mantra "when ammo is cheap, stack it deep". |
