December 7

Hey, let's try and get along today, OK? Have some respect?

Show the kids that some things from the past still matter.

We lived in Hawaii, in Waipahu when Tora Tora Tora was filmed. Waipahu sits right above Pearl Harbor and looks down into the harbor. We sat on our front porch and watched as the Zeros flew around, and the explosions went off, knowing 100% that it was just a movie. It was eerie to see the formation of Zeros fly over us. I just can't imagine the terror at the time, knowing they were happily shooting anyone and causing such destruction. As they learned, they picked a fight with the wrong country.

Certainly a day to remember...

... that will live in infamy.

Well, unless it's "cancelled" for being "too racist."

So many sacrifices made to dig out of the hole created by Dec 7th.

I got to visit Pearl Harbor Memorial over Thanksgiving. It's extremely well done and sobering. I can't imagine what those brave heroes faced that day.

I am really curious about the rebuilding of the Pacific fleet after the attack. What's a good book to read about it?

RIP to all the souls lost that day . My wife and I went to the Pearl Harbor park many years ago . As stated above it is very well done/presented and is quite sobering on what happened that day . The boat ride to the memorial you could hear a pin drop , no one was talking . Everyone was respectful to what we were about to see and experience . I recommend this as a bucket list visit.

I see that vash has taking the opp to put in his standard issue jab. ;)

We do have a threat that this war act history will be washed away. Pretend otherwise if you would like. --it's so PC of you.

The fundamental of this thread is promulgating the remembering. My punctuating the need to remember by pointing to the climate we are in now is just that.

Dec 7th. We will always remember. When we lived on Oahu, we went to Honolulu Naval Base and saw where the first bomb hit the tarmac. Very haunting to see the blast scars.

I wanted to share a pic of a guy crouched up with a dud bomb in the hull of the WV, but couldn't, so here's the whole website

The photos below were taken at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam AFB, Oahu HI.

It is damage to the operations building from the day of the attack. As a reminder of those who lost their lives on that day the damage was never repaired.

Thank you for the post/thread, Herr Oberst.

Indeed a date worth remembrance. Godspeed to all lost and their families.

My father was stationed on the cruiser Helena CL-50 during the attack.

Quote:

Completed in late 1939, Helena spent the first two years of her career in peacetime training that accelerated as tensions between the United States and Japan increased through 1941. She was torpedoed at the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 and was repaired and modernized in early 1942.
He wrote an account of the attack.

Thanks Baz, I love reading the first hand accounts.

Veterans Day 2010 I had the honor of flying presentation flags over the USS Arizona Memorial. It was about 0700 in the morning and the silence was deafening. It was all I could do the keep the lump in my throat down and not turning into a blubbering heap.

Volunteers are working to compile the story of every Pearl Harbor casualty.

I visited Pearl Harbor with my parents back in the mid-70's. Oil still leaking from the Arizona. Sobering indeed.
