If that car was gold, that would be the twin to one of my dad's old Volvos. I had a '73, terribly rusty. Tried to close the hood one day and the inner fenders just disintegrated into dust. I ended up getting a couple barn door hinges, drilled holes in the cowl, drilled holes in the hood, called it good. I ended up trading that car for a brand new mountain bike. I still have the bike.

I had one of those in the silver-blue paint during college and several years after. I miss that one. A very solid car...I fielded a deer @ 60mph above the front bumper and between the headlights one night coming back from the GP at the Glen in 77. Hew grille, hood, radiator. condenser, and front panel, and all was good with the world again for several years.

Dad had a 1970 164. It looked a lot like this one but with blue leather interior. It was fun to drive but he sold it to get something slower before I turned 16. We always saw more 142s than 164s.

Here is one of the comments from the auction I thought very informative: "The 1971 Volvo 142E is a car I consider to be a ‘one year only’ model. First, although the fuel-injected version of the B20 engine had been introduced in 1970 in the 1800, the ’71 142E was the first 140-series car with it. The car was offered as a 2-door only; it was also the first 140-series car with metallic paint and leather interior. The paint choices were limited to metallic gold, metallic red, and metallic light blue, and black was the only interior color choice. There were some other unique features to it which escape me at the moment. These were sold alongside the still-carbureted 142, 144, and 145 models. Volvo would not introduce the Bosch D-Jetronic injection across the rest of the 140 lineup until partway through the 1972 model year. When I worked as a service tech/service advisor at two different NJ Volvo dealerships in the 1970s and 1980s, I got to drive a few of these owned by our service customers. They were plenty peppy for their time, and with that long-throw shifter, were fun to toss around a bit. RE: the auction car, it looks relatively unmodified, which I think is a good thing. The color code ‘46’ confirms that the car was born red. It’s too bad that the upholstery was redone in vinyl, but I can understand the reluctance to spend the money for leather. I’ve checked out a few for sale on the east coast, but this west coast car looks much better preserved than what I usually find."
