Panama People

Went there to tour the canal. The people were great. Modern city mixed in with an expected Central American old city.

Been through once, on the USS Valley Forge, CG-50. The ship was brand new and we flew from North Island and met her in Pascagoula, MS and sailed back to San Diego.

Gatun Lake, early with little traffic, Captain lit all four jets, a picture I have posted before. We were booking:

Everyone not on watch was invited top side.

We stopped at Rodman Port for the night and I may have had a few creme de menthe's in Panama City that night

BTW, the Valley Forge (CG-50) was used as target practice and sunk off Kauai.

When we flew into Panama, the jet made a u-turn over the Pacific end of the Canal.
It looked like a scene of the landing on Normandy. Dozens of ships all pointed towards the Canal...waiting their turn.

In a city of 1.5 million....I think I was the only male wearing shorts.
I'm sure I was spotted as a gringo. They only wear long pants there.

Here is what I remember from my one night with Panama People (and I was on my best behavior): The food was great and, like Spain, nothing got rolling until I had to be back at the ship, around 11pm.

Pity.

^^^ So true...their evenings don't start until midnite or after.

The biggest problem I had was the language. English is not a second language there.
Being the financial capital of central america...you would think someone would know the language.

Upon landing at Panama...the taxi driver wanted the name of the hotel. It took almost 10 minutes for the driver to understand me. To his credit, when we started out, he drove like a maniac and passed a half mil locals to get there.

At the 'museum of the canal history' They show the terrible obstacles and deaths involved with the building of the Canal. It's unreal. Truly a man-made miracle.

There is a viewing platform to watch the ships as they move thru the canal.
It's funny to watch the small sailboats and such attach to the huge freighters to move thru the canal. They still have to pay..it's the only way to do it.

Impressive pic, Paul

Not been to Panama but have got as close as you can get without going there...

On our family vacation while out and about exploring the very south of the Caribbean side of Costa Rica we kinda got lost in a banana plantation while trying to find a beach

My cell phone pinged the message 'welcome to Panama' but I knew we weren't there as we hadn't crossed the river

When stationed at Ft. Sherman (North end of the canal), we used to go fishing on Gatun lake. Man, the parties we had after a fishing trip.
I made lots of flights to Howard, Rodman, Amador, and Clayton. Pretty much flew the canal day and night (NVG). Pretty country.

When I retired, I bought a motor home with the plans of driving thru central america to the Darian Gap. From there, I was undecided if I wanted to continue.

I wasn't too excited about loading the motor home onto a ferry to make the transit.
