A fellow Pelican built a bass guitar for me

Targa911S (David) built a custom Fender Precision bass for me in November and it's incredible!

David is a generous, gifted and honorable man and he built a bass guitar that I will keep and pass along to my son when I'm gone. He went to a lot of trouble to get the color (Lake Placid Blue) exactly right and the craftsmanship of the bass is evident in the way it looks and more importantly, the way it plays!!

I've played the drums for 50 years and I have always wanted to learn the bass and when David found out, he gathered my requirements and made excellent recommendations and built the most beautiful bass I've ever seen! It plays so easily and smoothly that learning is much easier than it would have been with a store bought beginner bass.

Needless to say, I'm ecstatic and wanted to share my fantastic experience with David - and to publicly thank him again for building such a special bass guitar for me. I will always cherish it and I'm proud to call David a friend!

My soon to be "up for sale" Slingerland drumset

My drums will be up for sale as soon as I get them polished up and inventoried. I have years worth of extra hardware spare and replacement parts as well as cool accessories.

I also watched the build on Facebook. David does excellent work, I've seen a few of his builds. Have fun with it Art and good to see you back on Pelican.

Now you just need to get a hat and some red Coboy boots!

Looks great, Art! How are you learning to play the bass? I took lessons from a Mr. Tapia through Campana Music when I was in 8th grade. He taught me how to read music, but he was a big band guy, not a Neil Young guy.

I'm a member of Scott's Bass Lessons and have been following the "foundations" and learning the fretboard and fingering, then a scale at a time until I become proficient. I practice every day. I watch Davie504's videos as well as many others. There are a lot of good instructional videos on Youtube and I'm able to work at my own pace. I'm hoping my drum background will help but my fingers don't want to cooperate, so I need to get them limber and doing what my brain is telling them to do! The strings are so smooth and cooperative that it's easy to get nice tone out of the instrument!

What makes it a Fender PB? Body? Pick guard?

Good question! It's a genuine Fender P bass body with P bass electronics, as well as P bass pickups. The neck is a Fender jazz neck in roasted/torrified maple, which is narrower than a P bass neck. Fender tuners, Wilkinson bridge and Thomastik Enfeld flatwound strings.

What makes it a P bass to me is the pickups/body/controls and the Jazz neck is very close to a P bass. The tone is pure P bass.

Biggest regret of my life is selling my '67 Sunburst P bass for tuition.
