Shortest day of the year

I love this day because tomorrow and every day thereafter will get longer and longer. Such a great day!

It is my Daughter's Birthday, The Winter Solstice. This year:

7:58:30 from sunup to sundown here today. Short days indeed.

On this, the shortest day of the year, I like to crawl up with a warm cup of milk and a good youtube video of raw DOT video of winterstorm highway pileups.

Absolutely, shared sentiment on my part. I much prefer the longer days. I'd love to get rid of the non-daylight savings time between Nov and Mar and make DLS permanent too. Give me the light in the evenings year 'round!

On St Simons Island, where I am presently, sunup today was 7:20 AM and sundown will be at 5:27 PM, or 10 hours and 7 minutes of daylight this far south from Calgary. Hmm.

I don't remember the super short days from when I lived in northern Japan (not as far north as you 40ºN vs your 51ºN), but I do remember the crazy long days in the summer. I seem to remember the sun coming up at 430 and it being light at or near 9pm.

Yep, lots of insanity out there when things turn snowy and icy.

LEAKYSEALS951 12-21-2021 10:10 AM

i do love the prospect of longer days. Paradoxically, I get a little bummed on summer solstice because it's all downhill from there.

I have exactly the opposite opinion. I would love to get rid of DST and stay with mountain standard year round.
If we went to year round DST, we wouldn't see the sun until 9:37 am in January.
Nice day today and I need to get outside for a bit. Some very cold weather coming our way soon!

pwd72s 12-21-2021 10:17 AM

7:45 to 4:34 here..approx 35 miles south of the 45th parallel.

With the days getting longer..soon it'll be bikini weather, right?

Crowbob 12-21-2021 10:30 AM

As the days grow longer so the cold goes stronger.

It'll be bikini weather here on Friday (80ºh). ;) :D

I used to like my extra hour in the evening, now I hate waiting for the sun to come up! Seems like somebody would figure out how to add an hour of daylight on both ends of the day :D!

Living in Western Oregon, November and December are DARK.

This is always a happy day for me. It was even sunny and lovely today. Getting darker now. 3:27PM...

It sure didn't seem like the shortest day at work, with nearly everyone else on vacation.

Maybe what we need to do is split the difference and set the clocks forward 30 mins, then break off the adjustment knob.

Right. You think "it'll be slow because of the holidays." But then because work is a ghost town, even though it is slow, the work load isn't much less.

I would be ok with this.

GH85Carrera 12-22-2021 06:21 AM

Years ago I worked at a place where the boss's wife insisted on working there even though she was dumber than a chicken. One day on the first day of winter we were talking about it being the shortest day of the year, and she popped off that the shortest day was not before Christmas when she was younger, it always came later. I just stood there with my mouth open but had no reply, except to walks away shaking my head, and muttering something about what an idiot she was.
