Mid-Air collision... somebody was not paying attention !!

Cessna (UPS contract plane per later news) collided with a paraglider. Eye witnesses state the Cessna flew into the paraglider. Also per later news, both pilots dead.
Happened just a mile or so from our house?

I have had two near mid air collisions in my private aircraft flying neither I nor other aircraft saw one another until last second I yanked and banked to avoid first one with glider in Florida. Second one in Ohio while arriving at a fly in, a low wing airplane descended right over my nose from behind and above me. He never saw me. Still very rare to happen anywhere other than near airports. Big sky...Little airplanes

wow, horrible luck. I have to think that if you get into a mid-air collision any place except maybe at one end of the runway, it's got to be "your time" because there's A LOT of space and not that many planes, so the odds are pretty low. Except at one end of a runway or the other. That's kind of a high traffic spot.

One didn't seem 'em and I hope the other didn't see it coming .... tragic for both :(.

The human eye is attracted to motion.
Pilots are taught to keep scanning the sky, but if on a straight on collision course, another aircraft just slowly getting bigger, with no apparent movement, one doesn't naturally see it until there is little time to react.

Scary stuff, for sure.

Also but maybe not in this particular incident keep in mind closing speed, even in a small single engine aircraft going 150-200mph with another similar speed aircraft at around a 400mph total speed distance evaporates very quickly...
