Anyone using / used a Covid home test?

I hear the gov'mnt is going to make them available. Anyone?

cabmandone 12-22-2021 05:28 AM

Yep! Have 5 of them on the counter right now. We tested our son this week because he woke up with a scratchy throat. Got them at the public library of all places!

ltusler 12-22-2021 05:29 AM

I read you will have to sign up on a web site to get them.

For the free ones. The 500 million free ones announced yesterday won't be available until sometime in January. You can buy them locally if they aren't sold out.

I have never purchased one.

Which brand Cabby? You are hereby publicly indemnified.

Will be testing in a few hours. We have our family Christmas dinner today. Read: frail old folks.

Don’t want to kill Grandma.

Gus Berges 12-22-2021 06:26 AM

Could someone please point me in the right direction where to get these free kits?

wilnj 12-22-2021 06:31 AM

We’ve used them. BiNaxNow was the brand. I think it’s about $25 per kit, 2 tests to a kit.

No real idea about accuracy, we’ve only gotten negative results but then again, it was only because of a potential for third party exposure (friend of a friend).

They were simple to use and provided a result in about 15 minutes.

ErVikingo 12-22-2021 07:25 AM

BiNax. Got a bunch at Sams Club to have at hand.

Zeke 12-22-2021 07:48 AM

Sold out everywhere, although you can get lucky. Supposed to be a better supply after the holidays for one or more reasons. Going to get in line at the park in few minutes so I'm good for Saturday's dinner. No guarantee, but better than nothing. My family will all be tested or stay home. They all work in very public jobs or are in school.

Transmission of the Covid virus is said to be at its highest potential the day before symptoms arrive while the common cold is 2-4 days in. Regular flu is similar to Covid.

craigster59 12-22-2021 08:31 AM

I've used both BiNax and Quickview (the one with grandpa and grandkid on the box). Both were accurate but I prefer the Binax because the 2 tests were individually packaged and seemed a little easier to use..

Can't find them around here, all sold out.

Evans, Marv 12-22-2021 08:46 AM

I bought two kits a few days ago at a CVS. I thought we should have some on hand & wanted to get some before they were sold our. The first drug store (Rite Aid) was sold out. $25 apiece.

911 Rod 12-22-2021 08:47 AM

Schools are handing them out for free here and apparently parents are selling them for $150 a pop.

As John Mellencamp said, "That's America...."

Rikao4 12-22-2021 10:26 AM

so you find a test..
now what..
seems everyone is either...
looking to find out their vaccine didn't work..
or complying for paper to enter the local Gulag..

They are made by Abbott. It's supposed to be a proctored test but my oldest daughter has had to do two each week during her internship at a long term care facility so she told my son what to do. We didn't need a certified test, just wanted to make sure he didn't have the vid or at least be reasonably sure.

Except it's actually Canada. But I'm sure they have little pink houses up there too.SmileWavy

They are available here still no issue. We have been purchasing the BTNX brand antigen tests from https://rapidtestandtrace.ca/, doubtful they ship to US though. They may have an American arm, they have tons of stock on the kits.

I have a bunch of the Quickvue tests. The gf's been hanging out with her pal and her pal's roommate was positive. So the gf gave a box to her gf to test, and it was negative. My gf tests and hers showed positive. She did it again and it was positive again. I tested and mine was negative. Had her get a real test on Monday and the PCR test was negative. So be careful of false positives.

john70t 12-23-2021 07:08 AM

Those are only a few years too late.

I called the local Walgreens and spent a half hour on hold. They said sign up online. The website didn't work whatever I tried. Another 20 minutes on hold with the corporate number again who said to call the local number. An hour wasted in a vicious circle. They could have just said "not available".
Called the local Rite Aid. They had a few tests left so hurry up and get there soon. Drove across town. Their tests were full PRC with a 2-5 day result after sent to NJ. They gave me the address of a local government test center nearby.
Went to an unmarked door in a half empty mall. Shabby inside. Run out of boxes. Half a dozen people lined up at counters and a nice woman handling it all. Free. Got my email an hour later.

Well, he didn't say USA...Canada is in America! :)

Typical scumbag behavior, doesn't really seem to respect borders.

If you ever want to piss off a Canadian, saying that will do it.

I assume you mean the free ones because the home kits have been available for months..

My GF works for Abbott.. She has a few cases of them in her garage but she goes through them quick. Every time she goes into a hospital/doctors office she has to take one, etc.. Company policy.

flatbutt 12-24-2021 04:10 AM

Pretty much unobtainium here.

upsscott 12-24-2021 01:24 PM

Just bought four of them at Walgreens. The line was long and everyone had tests in their carts. My youngest son is symptomatic but we all tested negative. Hopefully it’s accurate. Better to be safe than sorry I guess.

tops911 12-25-2021 06:33 AM

Maybe I missed it but is there a treatment for one who tests positive? Or just a typical self quarantine? If there is no treatment why test, just to know one has covid?

So as to not go into public?

Steve Carlton 12-25-2021 10:44 AM

I did a little research this morning. Walmart is out of stock for BinaxNOW at $14. I ordered a On/Go COVID-19 Antigen Self-Test instead from them for $29.99 because they deliver it fast, just to have one.

The best accuracy home kit looks like Lucira using PCR, so I got one of these to verify a positive result on a regular antigen test. I'll apply for the free tests when they become available.

I believe Pfizer and Merck have treatments that have been approved.
