Parking Ticket - Florida Style

So yesterday I parked and paid for 4 hours with PayByPhone ($18). Come back to the car 2 hours later to a $40 fine.

Call the city's parking violation office to see what is up with this. "Sir, your plate has a "o" on it and its hard for the parking enforcement agent to read so you must change it to a "0".

Ahem, mam, I got a violation before because another plate I have has an "o" which i was told to write down as a "0".

"Sir what can i tell you, we have morons working for us. You have any idea how many of these calls we get daily?".

3rd time I have had issues parking in the same area. 3 different cars. I should put a GoPro to film the genius.

That is Flori-duh for sure. Maybe you need to get a personalized tag with just letters and no O involved.

At the Robber's Cave State park in Oklahoma they have an electronic parking setup. Just park wherever you can squeeze in, and find the little 11x14 size sign that has the phone instructions to use your cell phone to pay for parking. There was a park ranger walking around and scanning tags and writing tickets to cars that did not pay.

It is the only time I have ever had to pay for parking with my cell phone.

It was a cool park.

Those signs are everywhere around here....

One of the biggest offenders is at a local park (Amelia Earhardt Park) where you must pay to park ($7 flat fee) if you park by the Mountain Bike trails yet its free most everywhere else?

Then, they have a smaller sign that says they are not responsible for any damages or break-ins.

What am I paying for then?

Had a look at that park, very nice! One for the list.

a place to put your car, not necessarily a safe place.SmileWavy

I don't know why they even have those signs. They are not responsible for your car or its belongings, period.

I don’t often find myself paying for parking outside of a garage but I thought the setup in Asbury Park was pretty convenient.

You paid via an app, entered plate number and CC info. No account or profile necessary which I find to be a pain for one time use.

To add more time to your ‘meter’ you just needed to go back to the same site and repeat the steps. It was very convenient when you walked around before dinner, then drinks after. No need to get back to the meter for more time.

Leave it to NJ to make it as convenient as possible to lift more $ from my pockets.

I know and if I ride 2 minutes to the trails the parking is free! and equally unsafe ;)

And if someone doesn't have a smartphone or credit card?
(I never knew those were a prerequisite for driving.)

Detroit's riverside area has public meters which require them. Seems like a tracking function along with their camera license readers.

The Late Great 356 Guru Harry Pellow, "The Maestro" as he went by, had a story in one of his books about he and his friends all getting California license plates with combinations of 1's and I's and 0's and O's just to thwart the parking ticket cops. :D

The parking meter was invented in Oklahoma. Yep, really. The first parking meter in world history was in downtown Oklahoma City. Now it is in the historical museum.

The area is just a cleared grassy spot in the woods. No real parking spaces, and no way to put in meters, that would be tied to a space without spending a fortune to pave the area, and make it ugly. The license tag method works for 98% of the population. I can't imagine leaving the house to go to a park and not have a credit card and my cell phone.

I'm thinking the opposite. Get a personalized plate with a common word with the letter O in it, but change it to a zero. When I get a ticket, it'll probably be written as if it had an "O" in it. Probably would have saved me $25 today.

Is it any wonder Cool Hand Luke is set in Gainsville?

The cell/cc thing is the principle of it. Public lands paid for and all that. I was denied a cc for years based on bad data.
The reality is a different matter.

I escaped a ticket yesterday.

Parked at the mountain, killer spot, couldn't believe it was empty.

Pull out at the end of the day and turns out, it was a handicap spot.

No signage other than the symbol on the ground which was only revealed after the snow covering it got melted from me parking on it.

oops

There was a story of some guy that thought it was be cool to have a personalized tag that read NONE. Within a few weeks of getting that tag he started getting tickets in the mail from all over the state. If a cop saw a car with no tag, they just put none in the line for tag number and they all went to him. He got it cleared up, and changed his tag number. The cops should have just impounded every car with no tag on the spot.

You should be able to fight that and win.

Whats to fight? He didn’t get a ticket.

Steve Carlton 12-29-2021 05:24 PM

You're right. When he said "oops," I figured he got the ticket. My bad.
