BFD. I hope the feds go after what is left of his estate. However, it looks like after stealing the equivalent of $1,600,000 and 40 years of employment there is nothing left. He applied for bankruptcy protection in 2014. Legal records showed he owed $ 220,000 in credit card debt and had few assets.

No one mentions the cost of resources spent looking for him.

There is no accountability anymore.

Did you ever hear of Statute of Limitations...

You could always make up a story about having a Mother.

Apparently, you aren't any more of a lawyer than I am, and you also didn't read (thoroughly) the link before commenting like I did.

According to the article, once he was indicted, he was screwed as it no longer applied.

In a letter sent to his girlfriend, he mistakenly thought he could return when the statute of limitations expired. But once he was indicted, that was no longer true.

i bet the deathbed confession was really for really really "upper management" in the divinity department.

great story tho.

I never said I was an attorney...and even if I were one I would never admit it to anyone.

A good attorney will never admit his faults... nor will a lousy one :D

Please. You'd sing like Pavarotti's version of Rigoletto: "Lawyerletto".

I do not doubt that for a second since I know even darker shades, people that make Niccolò look like an oracle of truth.

That said, the definition of a shyster lawyer is the other guys lawyer.

To the OP: Again, I really believe most people can not just STFU. I do not know why.

It is really not that hard to keep a secret. Just takes a tiny bit of self control.

Better to set up the alternate identity ahead of time.

Yeah, most crooks can't stop themselves from bragging about it. Then they have a falling out with their friends who later dob them in.

I wonder if he ever allowed himself to have any alcohol at all.

I don't exactly know why but I've always thought of you as the shifty lawyer type.

That's not meant to be an insult BTW.

A guy in our Accounts receivable department at a large international company figured out how to steal roughly $300k over several years (late 90's). He didn't exactly tell anyone, but made himself sick enough with anxiety he had to take some time off and ended up hospitalized. His scheme fell apart while he was gone. He hadn't spent a penny.

We had another accountant who had a simpler scheme but it worked well for a while. The game ended with the purchase of a new Mercedes, expensive house and a closet full of Nordstrom's best on a $75k salary (in 1995). Folks started talking, internal audit stepped in. Her goose was cooked.

My ex managed retail stores in the 80's. Their biggest issue with theft was from employees. She caught one she'd sort of become friendly with when the idiot invited her over to her place and showed her around. Walked in the bedroom and the closet door was open and full of new clothes with the tags still on :-)

Wow. Surprising on the first guy. Not at all surprising on the second guy (that's how a lot of them get caught).

Also not surprising at all on the third count. It's always been my understanding that most retail "shrinkage" is due to employee theft more than external theft.

Many years ago (mid-90s), I had a college buddy that knew another guy. The guy worked at Computer City. My buddy started getting boxes of stuff mailed to his apt. The guy worked in shipping/receiving. He'd throw something in the box for my buddy, ship it and then my buddy would keep his item and the guy would pick up the rest of the stuff. My buddy tried to rope me into the scheme. Nope, it's going to eventually fall apart.

My buddy got lucky. Detectives eventually showed up at his place. He told them that he barely knew the guy and didn't really know what was going on. He gave them one item that was in their list that he'd gotten from the guy, but then for a couple of other items had receipts that another friend of his had put together. Apparently, "they" weren't really interested in the recipients, but were concentrating on the employees. Apparently, "the guy" bought a 944, and then had an apt full of high end audio/video gear.

My buddy said that he heard that all of the management of the store had been canned because they were all stealing in various ways. Apparently, only a few employees were kept.

Hell, that goes for a lot of people, like contactors.

I'm old. If I won (I seldom play). I'd spend like crazy. But I'd also change my identity and move out of the country. Seriously. Nothing here that money would change except more of the same when I'd rather have less.

daepp 12-31-2021 06:17 PM

I'm guessing that keeping that secret might've eaten him up inside. IT's a shame really - especially when you consider the impact on his family of origin, his new family and his friends. Not worth it.
