If your car burns enough oil.... Do you ever have to change the oil?

Filters don't last forever...

Why is the engine using that much oil? Rings? Valve guides? Leaks?

Oil does collect a bunch of combustion byproducts. Changing the oil flushes those from the crankcase. Never changing the oil even though you burn a bunch can potentially lead to major sludge build up.

I suspect most people would just top it off but if you think about it they're actually concentrating what's suspended in the oil that's not being burnt off... Which is not good at all for the engine.

- I'd recommend changing the oil and then using an additive to try and reduce oil burning.

It's a stuck ring. Seals up when you drive the snot out of it. But short trips is drinking the oil.

I have a low km jdm engine sitting in a container for when this one starves to death.

Maybe I'll just change the filter to a fram and see if it lasts through the spring. 🤣

It really doesn't smoke much. I've tried using atf to free up the ring and it worked short term. Gotta love high mpg beaters.

I've used ATF and Acetone (50-50) to free up and seized engine. Just pored it in through the spark plug holes and let it soak for a few days. It had sat for about 20 years. Once we got it started and running the compression came up to almost normal.

It was a Suzuki Bongo van and I drove it for years afterwards.

Put some Marvel Mystery Oil in it instead of oil when you top off next time. It'll probably free that ring up by the time you need to get gas again.

Or, just put in as much ATF as it needs to come up to level and plan on changing the oil in about 50 miles. Best done on one trip.

That was how I bought my beautiful first generation Honda Civic.

Girl explained to me she puts a litre (quart) in a week so it's had the equivalent of an oil change every month. So I bought the car for next to nothing because of all the smoke. I did an oil change and filter, drove it for an hour another oil change and filter and a couple of can's of "Wynn's for oil" a stop smoke Teflon coating type product. No smoke for the next three years. Loved that car.

I know that some folks have good experiences with 'motor repair in a can' products. 50 years ago there used to be a product for bad rings but all it had was a bunch of thickeners. Great for compression but clogged up all the oil passages. Kind of like radiator stop leak. Works for the radiator but clogs the cooling ability in the block.

Marvel Mystery Oil or Seafoam does work but you've got to run it for a short time and then IMP do 2 oil changes. One right away and then another in 500 or 1000 miles to be sure it is out of the system. I have read where some feel that when you 'clean' the motor you are loosening up gunk that can then get trapped in other places. I guess at this point the OP doesn't have anything to lose to try it.

Mine is never at 0% oil life until 12K miles since last change.

Went from the 5w to 15w-40.
