Car trailer tie down straps

Hello everyone Merry Christmas ! So I need to buy four tie down straps for my car trailer . On my previous trailer I had 3" wide straps from HF . When I sold that trailer I let them go as part of the deal .

I will tow items that are 5,000 lbs or less . Usually 3000 or less . Home Depot has these 2" x 27' straps with a working load rating of 3333 and a breaking strength of 10000. I always use four straps , would you guys have any issues using these ?

I received some HD gift cards for Christmas so planning on what to buy 😋

I have these, purchased from HF, IIRC:

I'd say that they are 4" but don't have them in from of me. They are good straps and are gentle on the cargo.

My brother uses these in combo with the ones that go over the tires, as seen below. He has found that those don't always work as well as expected as they have to be put on 'just right' to stay tight over longer trips.

The front wheels of the black 911 are the only ones shown that are properly done. In line with the hub. Over the tire straps are good too, the kind the look like a harness. Using fore and aft as well as side to side strapping is essential. The rest of what is shown is fine until....whoops.

Which is 95% of the time. it's that 5% that will get you.

Funny story: when I sold the blown up 914 race car to Joe Bob, I told him and his buddy Ingo, that the car had to be loaded ass first for proper tongue weight, as it was when they took off for Santa Barbara. Somewhere, someday they loaded it front first and proceeded to the freeway where the trailer came around and the tow car and trailer did a complete 360º at speed. It was a short 14' trailer originally for a Bobcat.

That's a 'whoops'.

Milt : I have always used straps in a cross pattern vs straight back . I was under the impression that this keeps the vehicle/load from moving front and back and side to side . In your opinion is that wrong ? Not challenging you but would like to hear your opinion . It's quite possible I have been doing it wrong for all these years .

My scenario is based on using four straps , two on the front and two on the back . Are you suggesting side straps should also be used ? So eight straps ?

I did a generic search on how to tie down a car on a trailer . Everyone has an opinion but this guy says straps in a X pattern can chaffe against each other . I had NEVER thought about that . Anyway I found it to be a good read .

The front wheels of the black 911 are tied down exactly the same as both cars I posted. My method is redundant…about double what is needed to hold the car in place. The advice about tongue weight is right on.

I would not wrap strap around anything with an edge, it will eventually cut thru the strap.
Always use the strap hooks and trailer rings to anchor the strap.
After towing for 10 minutes check for strap stretch and retighten.

911's tow different than a front engine car.
Rear wheels of 911 centered over most rear axle keeps trailer sway from occurring. Been there.

Besides what Ted is pointing out, I think it's also important to note that the F-car tie down should be moved so it's as short as it can be made. If the wheel rotates clockwise it'll come loose, and it will rotate given enough bouncing around going down the road.

I don't like the hook of these straps. If it gets loose or shifts, it can come off. My tie-downs always had snap hook, like these:

Those look to be the Macs like I have. Car trailer is long gone but still have the straps. Nothing at HD compares. Agree on the clips being a huge level of comfort.

Another sin is to leave the car in gear. The gears move against each other as the car slightly moves forward and back (accelerating and braking). It doesn't take long for the oil to wear off the gear faces then it's metal to metal for the rest of the trip.

In a perfect world, the spokes on all 4 wheels would have landed in the best place. In the real world, only 3 of them did. This wheel was probably the last to be cinched-down, with the car no longer moveable.
